    Hi
    Sorry for what is probably a repeat question but am I being a bit stupid?
    I have added a sub-category to the 'All Movies' view using a 'filename contains' rule.
    The group appears as a folder in 'all movies' in MP but all of the other films I have (ie those not covered by the rule) are not contained within the top level 'all movies'.
    Have I done something wrong?
    Cheers
    Ben

    The "All Movies" category is a dynamic one, it is usually not good to add custom sub-entries to dynamic ones, another example is "Genre". As far as I know you can not add a sub-category to a category item that already shows items. But if you first add an empty main menu category, then you can add sub-categories to that.

    Thanks for the answer
    It doesn't seem to work with two new categories either - which supports your point that you can't add a sub category to a category that already contains items.
    I guess this means that the general answer that is given to questions about groups/boxsets - ie to use categories instead - does not actually address the real reason for asking those questions.

    Code:
    Custom Categories (no filter, empty menu item)
       ||
       |=== Sub category 1 (with filter)
       |=== Sub category 2 (with filter)
       |=== Sub-Sub Menu 3 (no filter, empty sub-menu item)
            ||
            |=== Sub-Sub category 3.1 (with filter)
             \=== Sub-Sub category 3.2 (with filter)
       |=== Sub category 4 (with filter)
        \=== Sub category 5 (with filter)
    All Movies (default dynamic filter)
    Recently Added Movies (default static filter)
    Genres (default dynamic filter)

    The above works fine for me, you just can not mix it with any filters on the category menu holders (as far as I know anyway, but your trials confirmed my suspecions).

    Cheers, but I think that just confirms my understanding, although I haven't done any tests as it is now a bit late.
    I think this means that movies can only appear in the lowest level directories.
    What i would like is to have a mix of folders (ie sub categories, or groups) and movies within one folder. I don't think it is possible in MovingPictures, although would love to be wrong as i have found that i quite like the import process.

    NB it is possible to have sub folders if using MyFilms and one of the supported external catalogue programs, which i am also experimenting with, but so far it seems to me that there is some form of compromise whatever is used. For my needs/desires, at least.

    You are right, at the moment movies will only show up at the lowest level categories. Altering this is something that has been asked for for a while though so I will try to get this enhanced in the near future. Sorry for the troubles foxbenw.

    Given how nice the rest of the plugin is I'm not sure that apologies are necessary! But it would be great if you did add that functionality. Personally I would like to see my directory structure replicated where possible, based on the root directories used in the import settings.

    I have two top level movie folders. One is for DVD/BD rips, the other is for tv recordings. As a result they may share sub-folder names. For example I have James Bond as a sub folder in both because I have recorded some from TV and have Casino Royale on BD. It would be nice if the two James Bond folders were merged into one folder when viewed in MP.

    Of course, if adding the ability to have movies appear in parent categories is the 'quick' option, I would also be happy with that! Adding 10 or so sub categories for the movie groups I want wouldn't take long.
    Thanks for the answer

    If you are trying to arrange for categories mixed in with existing items to for example 'group' all your "James Bond" movies together, you might want to have a look at the IMDb+ scraper. It replaces the default imdb.com scraper and has a build in system to rename titles that belong to a series like that. So you will end up with "James Bond XXIII: Skyfall" sorted along with all your other Bond movies and not have to scroll all over your "All Movies" overview to locate the series in order.

    It also supports UK certifications with British-English titles (except for movie series, the current rename database only has US titles, but I'm working on fixing that as well, but right now you have to settle for "Harry Potter I: Sorcerer's Stone" and not the UK "Harry Potter I: Philosopher's Stone" title)

    But MyFilms also has a lot of benefits, if you deal with an offline catalog system already then MyFilms is the way to go because it can tie in with that managment system and offer more flexibilities via that combination. But setting up MyFilms wasn't easy when I tried it out, which is when I stumbled on MovingPictures. And now that I've written an adult scraper for it and the IMDb+ plugin+scraper there is no going back for me :D

    Thanks, RoChess, I will take a look, although may end up just renaming a few manually.
    I tried most of the external databases that MyFilms supports and it seemed that each time I would come across a different reason why it wasn't quite right.
    Essentially, unless there is one that does absolutely everything needed I think I will stick with MovingPictures.

    'everything' for me at the moment is as follows:
    imports movie files, isos and BD and DVD folder structures (and selects the correct index file for folder structures)
    stores (and exports into xml for myfilms) cover art, fan art, actor pics on a network location (most use local drive c/program data)
    allows for easy retrieval of UK titles and cover art
    replicates film folder structure for display in MP (as per this topic)
    Disappointingly, none of the ones I tried could do all of this.

    With MovingPictures I can retrieve all of the cover art (inc UK ones) and can delete the ones I don't want, then just rename a few titles where I need to.
    eg HP and Philosophers Stone - the US and UK cover art downloaded and i deleted the sorcerer's stone ones, then just renamed the film to the UK title.
