Hi guys not really a software issue but not sure where else to post. Ive got a DFI RS482 MB had it for a year or so. Seemed to be plagued by random restarts just like someone hit the reset switch.
I am beginning to suspect its speedfan and the way it accesses the SMBus. Sometimes it would run fine, but Ive reinstalled xp several times over this period and sometimes installed speedfan, sometimes not but didnt really link the two. I found a forum post (cant find it now!) that mentioned speedfan can cause this board to crash. On the SPCR site there is a link to the DIY-street (DFI forum) that mentions this issue. Seems they have deleted all their old posts so the link doesnt work for me.
Am currently running the MB which I have since taken out of my HTPC case without speedfan and it seems fairly stable but only been running for two days now. I installed speedfan and within an hour whammo! Reboot.
So I think Ive nailed it, after shelling out 250 bucks on a new MB/CPU thinking it was just a MB problem and that it was flaky. I need to upgrade my desktop (old socket 478 P4) so keen to keep using this board if speedfan is the problem.
Have any of you had similar issues?

Thanks for your input,
Matt

Why don't you use smartguardian that comes with the motherboard cd, it does exactly the same thing.

Or better still go fanless, those DFI chipset fans are noisy things.

    Smartguardian

Yeah I will. With the whole thing running caseless and the standard AMD CPU fan I can barely hear it sitting right next to it with smartguardian on. I just liked the control speedfan had. Its an old 939 MB no chipset fan!

    Cheers
