I am using a 5.1 stereo and it is almost running fine with MP.
When looking movies I want to hear 5.1 sound -> this works
When I am listining to music I don't want to hear the center speaker and I am wondering if it is possible to configure this to stereo or the front and rear speakers.

I don't think this a MediaPortal issue... is depends on your amplifier/receiver. How is the computer connected to the amp/receiver? Digitally or analogue?

The receiver should have an option to swith between 5.1 and stereo mode somewhere.

There is no option to select stereo or 5.1 because it is not possible on the amplifier. I am using a sony receiver and there is a 5.1 input what I am using. On most configurations for example a DVD player on the receiver connected to 5.1 I can select on the DVD player music or video.

If you use SPDIF (digital audio), you have to set your amplifier to "Auto", not to something like "ProLogic IIx" or similar.
That's not a MediaPortal issue. Consult your receiver's manual for information what mode does what. "Auto" makes sure 5.1 is used when 5.1 is available, otherwise 2.0 is used. All other modes do a blowup of the incoming signal. As said, your manual tells you everything about it.
