Posted this in wrong forum previously - sorry

In the last few weeks I have begun to experience stutter when playing back AVI files.

Every minute or two, the video playback will briefly pause then continue on, almost like a dirty CD, or (showing my age), a small scratch in a vinyl LP.

Possible culprits are some sort of load imposed by the audio - it seems to more frequently occur when a loud noise is involved in the audio track (that might also be just my imagination), maybe antivirus scanner?

Video playback is otherwise perfect, and this is just annoying. I did install a 3rd hard drive in the machine recently, and this is where the avi files are stored. Could this be the problem?

Any ideas to help track this one down would be appreciated.:D

Im having the same problem. There seems to be a spike in CPU (100%) usage when it happens. I've tried just about everything, and haven't been able to figure out whats causing it.

Only seems to happen when accessing shares over the network, and I'm not positive, but only seems to happen in fullscreen.

EDIT: Lokks like I fixed mine. Not exactly sure how. I did change the the MPA to 24bit from 16 since thats what the soundcard that is in the machine uses. I think that may have been what fixed it, but I'm not sure.

    This is driving me nuts.

I have tried most of the advice found on these forums but still stutter. Not constant but every few minutes the screen freezes for possibly one or two frames, then moves on, no apparent glitch in the sound.

I have used MPA/MPV Decoders to no avail, am presently using ffdshow. I bought the Purevideo Codec and tried that also, no better.

Have upgraded nVidia drivers to 169.21, and then installed 163.75 on advice from another forum. No improvement.
Went back to basics and reinstalled everything, and went step by step through the ffdshow configuration wiki found somewhere here (kudos to the author, but still no joy).

I am presently using an SVN from sometime in January (not at my HTPC right now), but previous versions also gave the same issue.

Just annoying and every time it occurs I get that "Why don't you just put a DVD in the player?" look from she who must be obeyed.

Any further clues as to what to do next? I have noted the advice in relation to "Use Default Directshow Device", but can't do that as I am using kxdriver to route sound to my receiver via digital output on my audigy, and analog sound to the PC speakers.

Now I know what "Wits End" looks like, I'm at it.
