Post processing should be avoided as much as possible.
This in effect will always force VSFilter into the graph whether there are subtitles or not.
I have done numerous fixes for subtitle handling so ravenj your issues should now be resolved.

VSFilter not loading was probably due to an EVR filter compatibilty problem.

Thanks. So what are your codec recommendations/setup for playing everything with soft subtiltes(.srt/.idx+.sub)? I'm using post processing + directvobsub (autoloading version) at the moment. This is very nice I think as I can use my remote to turn subs off if they are badly written. But if this can cause playback issues (I've had *some* issues, minimizing risc factors would be nice) how should it be done?

    Using FDDShow with subtitles ticked?

Thats great news. I have not been able to get any subtitles working in my .mkv files.

Can you point me towards some kind of guide/pointers/info about what I have to do to enable them? Is there a switch somewhere that I need to set?

Is it possible to turn them on and off during playback?

Just get the latest mediaportal svn and enable subtitles via configuration without using any post processing.
Make sure DirectVobSub 2.39 and Haali MediaSplitter is installed.
If subtitles are there then your chosen language will be used and displayed.
Yes you can turn subtitles off during playback.
