My son is a Windows Media Center user. He has a huge DVD collection but hadn't used WMC for DVDs, just using his Blu-Ray player. Recently, he decided to start ripping his collection onto hard drives for convenience. He ripped a couple of DVDs, but testing showed no 5.1 output on his 7.1 system. A downloaded 5.1 test file worked just fine, but DVDs and rips would not play 5.1. Hours of study and testing showed everything was set up right.
I tried to help to no avail, and suggested he install MediaPortal so I could be of more help. (He lives 1000 miles from here.) So he did install the non-TV portion of MP 1.3.0, and his 5.1 rips and DVDs worked immediately with no fuss. He was impressed, and isn't looking forward to it, but is planning to fully switch to MP.
