Timeshift files not being deleted (1 Viewer)

I was recording two channels at the same time (BBC3 and BBC4) and watching one of them live. When I tried to change to the other channel, I got the "unable to start timeshifting" error and likewise when I tried to change back to the channel I was originally watching.

I found I could "Play from beginning" but not "Play from live point" and when I checked my timeshift RAMdisk, I saw there was a bunch of timeshift files still there, which should have been auto deleted as no timeshifting was currently occuring. After deleting those files, I was able to watch the channels being recorded live, so clearly MP wasn't happy with the amount of free space available on the RAMdisk which was causing the problems but I think MP should have deleted the redundant files automatically. In fact, I'm now recording BBC1 and BBC3 and switched from BBC3 to BBC4 and MP did delete the existing files and create some new ones, so it does work most of the time.

The problem just reoccured. I was recording BBC1 and BBC3 and watching BBC3 live. The recording on BBC3 came to an end and the following program was also set to record, but LiveTV just froze (fixed picture, no audio). I was unable to tune to any channel, including those being recorded, until I deleted the files on the RAMdisk (live1-0.ts.tsbuffer, live1-0.ts.tsbuffer1.ts, live1-0.ts.tsbuffer2.ts, live1-0.ts.tsbuffer3.ts, live1-2.ts.tsbuffer, live1-2.ts.tsbuffer1.ts). The TSWriter.log shows "MultiFileWriter: failed to create file R:\\live1-2.ts.tsbuffer1.ts" even though that file is present.

How large is your ramdisk ?

What are your timeshift buffer settings ? (The buffer settings are per-tuner)

As far as I remember, MP 1.0.2 will not delete the timeshift files while a recording is taking place on that tuner, so you need to allow some headroom in the ramdisk size/timeshift buffer settings. I think they get cleaned up (per tuner) when live viewing starts on an idle tuner, so old files hang around until then.

My RAMdisk is 256MB and I had MP set to 3*40MB timeshift files, so it should have been enough room for both tuners. I've reduced it to 3*30MB now.

In the situation where I had two consecutive recordings on the same channel, I would have thought that MP would just use one set of timeshift files for that channel but it appeared to be trying to create two sets. I would have also thought it would be better if the timeshift files were deleted when timeshifting is stopped rather than waiting until LiveTV is started again, as this seems to lead to the problems where MP decides there's insufficient space to create the files.

It would be better, but I think you'll have to try and persuade a developer to modify the behaviour again. The current situation is much better than it was 4 months ago (when sometimes the files never got deleted) - see https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/1-0-final-svn-builds-303/problem-timeshift-files-mutiplying-channel-change-while-recording-55357/
