Wouldn't you need double the bandwidth if you were playing back from the buffer? Enough to write the TS file and enough to read it at the same time?

I tried ramdisks a while ago - made system stop playing live TV after about a minute or so, but only while I was recording another channel. Probably filled the ramdisk. Only had 2GB to play with.

If you adjust the timeshift buffer settings to fit the ramdisk size they work very well - I run a 1GB ramdisk, but I used to run a small 256MB one (the minimum MP timeshift buffer size is 3 x 20MB files per tuner).

Currently I use 'Gavotte_RAMDisk_1.0.4096.5_20081113' software - this is freeware and can make use of the otherwise inaccessable RAM when you have 4GB installed on 32-bit Windows, so I get about 700MB of the ramdisk effectively for free in terms of system RAM.

Yeah I admit I didn't mess with the settings too much - created too much unsatisfactory WAF ;) Went from WAF to WUF.

Just a quick update - I'm now watching BBC HD and ITV HD with no problems, still using the same cheap 4GB flash stick.
    Perhaps I'm just incredibly lucky...

    Thanks for the update.
I am not sure if it's luck or not. I didn't manage to timeshift (SD) on my 8Gb Sandisk Cruzer. Now I use RAMDisk instead and it works fine. The problem is that I am still on 32bits system so I only use 1.5Gb for timeshift which is on the minimum side.

this is off topic but even with a 32bit OS you can use RAM beyond the 3GB limit for RAMDisk (use the RAM not adressed by the operating system). Like SuperSpeed RAMDisk. Or update to Win7 final 64bit

Are you sure this works? I thought the 3.25-4GB range was not addressable via windows so how does it create the ramdisk?
maybe i should be invested in another 2GB stick for my computer.

I have a 1GB Video card, if i install 4GB RAM what will be available as system memory / ram drive.

in my case the only Ramdisk that could use the unmanaged RAM was Superspeed. Gavotte wanted to use the already adressed 3GB (depends on hardware maybe). But Gavotte is free, so try that first.

With 4 GB RAM and a dedicated Videocard (=no shared video RAM from system RAM) you could sacrifice RAM up to 2 GB for RAMDisk (and in case of XP even up to 3 GB, leaving 1 GB for the OS). I use Vista 32bit, 1,5 GB for RAMDisk, 256 MB for the shared videoRAM, rest for Vista.

to get most out of RAMDisk:
    - put Timeshift folder onto RamDisk
    - put the Cache folder on RamDisk
    - put the Skins folder on RamDisk
    - put the Database folder on Ramdisk
    - put the Thumbs folder on RamDisk
    - dont forget to edit the mediaportal_folders.xml file with the new path (or called something similar, in MP Root folder) and load the RamDisk Image after every Reboot from backup on harddrive!!!!!! leave the old folders in place also and backup the ...folders.xml file too in case of trouble.
    - if you use moving pictures plugin, edit the paths in config/advanced

But this is off topic here, not much to do with timeshifting on a flash drive. I suggest these topics (in German, sorry):
