For movies to be detected the MovingPictures plugin has to run. This happens when you are inside the configuration screen (either direct or via MediaPortal configuration), and of course once MediaPortal GUI is running and it has started the plugins in the background. So even if you are watching a TV show in MP-TVSeries plugin, the MovingPictures plugin will pickup new movies, added to the import folders it monitors, in the background.
