I am trying to get quicktime video files to play. What i have done is installed Quicktime Alternative. And what i can do is:
- Play any quicktime video in ZoomPlayer or Media Player Classic
- I can only play HD content video (.hdmov) in WMP 10, and it is the same in MP; i can not play .mov. In WMP 10 i only get sound (no video), and in MP nothing even happens, i select the video but it doesn't do anything.

Why do .mov files work in ZoomPlayer and MPC but not in WMP10/MP? and yet .hdmov works in WMP10/MP?

I have tried installing Quicktime 7.1.x first, then QTA on top off that, but it's the same thing.
I have ffdshow and the K-lite codec pack, and a few other things.

Any help getting .mov working is appreciated.
Thanks,
Aaron

    Hi,

Why do .mov files work in ZoomPlayer and MPC but not in WMP10/MP? and yet .hdmov works in WMP10/MP?

Because ZoomPlayer and MPC are using own codecs for the playback of MOV files, while WMP/MP should use the Quicktime Alternative DirectShow filter. Since the MOV files do not play in WMP, I think somethink went wrong with the installation of Quicktime Alternative. Try reinstalling it, what version did you install?

Also it is never ever good to install codec-packs. Why do you use k-light and ffdshow? One thing should be enough (I would recommend ffdshow).

    HTH,
    Flip.

thanks for the reply. ah, directshow, that explains it. i don't understand why they couldn't just make WMP configurable in terms of decoder/filter selection?
anyways, i have tried uninstalling/reinstalling, and it didn't make a difference. i am using QTA 1.76.

I am using K-Lite because it comes with everything i needed (QTA and FFDSHOW included). so it came with FFDSHOW, however i have switched over to a different version of FFDSHOW because i have found it works better for me (i only use FFDSHOW for NR and resize post-processing). and i have tried installing QTA seperately (using different one that came with the codec pack).

I actually just tried this on another PC without any codec packs or MP installed, and it is the same problem. Maybe QTA 1.76 is not a good one to use?
People who have this working (playing .mov in WMP10), what version of QTA is being used?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I know this does not help at all: MOV files are running fine here with QTA 1.76 in WMP / MP.

Tried graphedit? You can use "File->Render Media File" to check which DirectShow filters are used. Although it is not much to see here.

    MOV->Color Space Converter->VMR9

Looks like the codec pack screwed up things. They are quite famous for such. Better get rid of it as soon as possible.

Team MediaPortal strongly recommends NOT to use any codec packs. Latest builds of ffdshow are fully supported (and recommended), QT alternative also works without problems.

running GraphEdit, it just shows (for video output):
color space converter -> VMR Input() Video Renderer

and yes, it could be possible that the codec pack is to blame, but i already mentioned that i have tried this on another computer that has no codec pack installed, just QTA 1.76, and i was getting the same result.

well, strangely enough it seems to be working now on the MP machine. i'm not entirely sure what i did, however i think i did a Restart and it was working after that.
However, now there is another issue: When playing .mov files, i get almost 100% CPU usage, and sometimes playback is not very smooth. this is only with WMP10/MP. MPC plays it fine as before. .hdmov also plays fine as before in WMP10/MP.
also, in MP, if i stop the playback of the video, i just get a blank screen (although MP is still working, i just can't see anything).

    Hi,

this still sounds like a corrupt installation. I have QTA on three machines without any problems.

Since you think a reboot caused something, you should try this:
    - Uninstall QTA
    - Reboot system
    - Delete folder "/Programs/QuickTime Alternative/"
    - Reboot system
    - Install QTA
    - Reboot system
    - Hope it worked

Also, make sure you completely remove quicktime before installing quicktime alternative. As far as I know they are not supposed to coexist (I seem to remember it used to ask you to uninstall quicktime first, or perhaps even uninstall quicktime for you).
