TV channel scanning doesn't find a signal (1 Viewer)

Hi there, I'm new to MediaPortal so please bear with me.

I want to view TV and I'm not sure if I have everything configured properly. I know my video card (WinTV HVR-850) works because I can stream TV on Windows Media and Orb. However I'm not 100% sure how to configure it to work with MediaPortal.

When I scan stations....it doesn't find a signal.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Your help is appreciated.

    Hi and welcome Gnice :)

So are you scanning for cable or ATSC channels? Keep in mind that you can only use the tuner in one application at a time, so if Orb has the tuner then TV Server can't use it.

I think it would be best if you post logs. Please:

    1. Find the "debug mode" link in the "Team MediaPortal" folder in your start menu.
    2. Start it.
    3. Select option 3 "export all currently present logs".
    4. Click "proceed".
    5. A zip file containing all the information I need will be created on your desktop (default).
    6. Post the zip file here.

There are pointers for using the watchdog in our wiki -->here<-- if you get stuck.

I've got the same problem. I'm not scanning for cable channels, just through an aerial via the hybrid dvbt tuner. I've attached the log though. Thanks.

    Hi and welcome PP9552099 :)

Please change the "when card enters idle state..." setting from "pause card" to "stop card" and then try rescanning. The details for that setting are -->here<--.

    Thanks mm135

    Here are my logs.

Also, I may have put in the wrong IP address when configuring my TV Server. How can I change this?

    Hi again Gnice

The error in your logs is this:

    dvb: RunGraph returns: 0x8007001F

That can indicate many things - it is a generic error returned by the tuner driver so a little hard to guess exactly what it means. If I had to guess I would suggest that other software is using the tuner and this is preventing TV Server from using it. Please double check task manager as Orb may be running in the background even when you think it is not, and that would be enough to cause this. The other think it could be is the "preferred network provider" setting, which is in the same place in TV Server configuration (here - edit tuner settings) as the "stop card" setting. Try using "ATSC" instead of generic.

Regarding the IP address setting: do you mean for MediaPortal's connection to TV Server? That setting is the "hostname" setting in the "TV Client" subsection of the "TV" section in MediaPortal configuration -->here<--. Looks like the current setting is 174.56.136.96.

    Hello mm135,

Thanks for helping to diagnose my issues. I did find that Orb was working in the background so I stopped that. When going back into TVconfiguration I made the suggested changes and the scanning actually seemed to almost work (some stations stayed black vs red), however it is still not tuning statioms. I uninstalled and reinstalled MP, still not tuning in.

Could you help me with my latest log?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi again

    Three things...

First, you're very close to getting the Avermedia tuner working. You just need to change one or two settings:
    1. Open TV Server configuration.
    2. Expand the TV Servers node on the left.
    3. Select your TV Server - you should now see the tuner list on the right.
    4. Select the Avermedia ATSC tuner and click "edit".
    5. Change the "when card enters idle state..." setting to "stop card".
    6. Click "save".
    7. Go to scan again (TV Server will automatically restart).

If it still doesn't work then go back to that same place and try changing "preferred network provider" to ATSC. Documentation for those settings can be found -->here<--. Basically some tuners need them one way while others need them the other way - a bit of a matter of trial and error if you like. The same may be necessary for the Hauppauge tuner when you try and use it to scan for ATSC or QAM channels.

Second, keep in mind that Orb is most likely set to automatically run when you restart the PC. That will prevent TV Server from using the tuners again.

Finally for the HVR-950: if you want to use that in analog mode then you need to make sure you've installed the "SoftPVR" software that Hauppauge provides. That will hopefully give you the encoders that you need. Also keep in mind that you need to set that tuner up as a hybrid tuner - you can only use the analog *or* the digital tuner at any given time, not both at once.

    Hello mm135,

Okay we are making strides her. I am using the WinTV 850 analog device and I didn't have the original installation CD from Hauppage so I had to order it. I received it today and loaded the drivers. My WinTV 850 analog now scans the channels and identifies them. However, I still cannot view TV in MP and I get this "error Connection to the TV Server lost" . Do you have any idea what I need to do now?

(The WinTV7 software actually plays TV also)
