TV Guide/Channels simple explanation (1 Viewer)

I'm still trying to understand this whole MP project. Can someone explain how to setup the TV Guide and channel names in simple English

I did the autoscan under TVSserver but the channel names are not showing up and I have no idea how to create the tvguide.xml for the TVGuide. Do I use xmltv? I don't get it.

Ideally, I would like free TV listings for the US but I'm open to suggestions.
