TV-Server/Tuner Card question (1 Viewer)

I am new to the forum, but not new to forums/MP. I have my current server running just moving pictures with my 2TB drives housing my movie collection.

My Question is with the Hauppauge WinTV card I have. I want to run my server in the family room, but need a client in the bedroom. This is easy for just watching movies, but I want to be able to control the server (with TV Server) from the bedroom using the Hauppauge remote. Does this mean the Wintv card needs to be in the client machine with the TV Server installed? Or is there a way to route the IR to the server through the client so that my higher-end PC can run the TV Server?

If more clarification is needed, just ask.

Hi,

what do you want to control on the TV Server?
Actually all you do is control the client and the client will tell the server what to do.....which channel to stream, what to record etc. The client fetches the programm from the server etc. Nothing you need to control on the server with a remote.
You only need a remote for the client

So if I've understood correctly, you want the TV Server with the WinTV card in one room and you want to use the associated remote with a client in the bedroom.

What kind of remote is it? Is it one that has a separate USB dongle receiver, or does it have an IR receiver that is connected directly to the tuner?
If the first option, it should be possible to install Hauppauge's IR32 software on the client and plug the USB dongle in there. Maybe it is even an MC compatible remote. Having said that, then you'd have no remote to work with the server in the family room.
If it is the second option then you would need some kind of IR extender kit to pick up signals in the client room and send them to the receiver which would have to stay connected to the tuner in the server.

It may be a better (ie. cheaper, more future proof, easier) option to buy a MC remote with two receivers, connect one receiver to each machine, and carry the remote with you when you go to the bedroom. Or buy two remotes if it is more convenient and you have the budget.

Thanks for the replies. It seems all I need is another MCE remote with usb IR receiver.

The 2nd remote with USB IR receiver will control the client which fetches data from the server?
The original remote with IR receiver built into the tuner card will control the server which houses the tuner card?

That would work out great, that way there is no IR signal transfering between rooms.
