    Hi to all graphics experts.

Since a have a TV-set connected over HDMI with my HTPC, I sometimes get temporary colour-reversal on my TV-set.
This happens no matter if have the windows desktop, MP-homescreen or running video/TV in MP displayed.
It endures between a fes seconds to a few minutes and comes unpredictable.

I have a dual graphics adapter/triple display system:

    #1 GFX: ATI HD 4550/PCI-Express
primary --> DVI --> TFT with Windows desktop (1920x1080 @60Hz)
    second. --> VGA --> VGA touchsreen built into my HTPC-case (600x800 @ 60Hz)

#2 IGX: ATI HD 4200 (onboard)
    primary --> HDMI --> TV-set (1080p-50Hz mode)
    second. --> unused

This is the configuration that works best for me.
AFAIK the graphics-adapter on which MP runs should not a have a secondary display with a different refresh rate attached.
That's why I use the #2 IGX exclusively for the TV-set @50Hz so not to interfere with the other two displays @60Hz.

On the other 2 monitors (TFT and touchscreen) I have no colour-reversal at all!

The colour-coding scheme in ATI-CCC can be set to YCBCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, RGB limited range studio-mode and RGB full range.
The colour reversal happens (at the moment) slighty less often when I use RGB limited range studio-mode and slightly more in the YCbCr modes.

But AFAIK YCbCr are the better modes because it's the native mode in which nearly all digital video data are encoded.

The question is if there is any hope that this problem could be remedied.
I do have the suspicion, that it's a problem with my TV-set in combination with the ATI-HDMI-out.
The TV-set never has shown such a behaviour with other sources (HDTV settopbox also over HDMI in 1080p-mode, DVD-player over component-out in 50Hz progressive mode...)

Would logs be of any help or is there is a special tool with which I could watch what is happening?

    Kind regards

    Roger

    Hi Roger

So this *only* affects the TV? I would be inclined to think this is an ATI driver problem. I mean, does it happen if you are showing something on the TV with MediaPortal running?

AW: Re: TV temporarily reverses colours

    Hi mm,

yes. It only affects the (part of the extended windows desktop) ATI HD 2400 --> HDMI --> TV-set and this no matter, if I let a windows-program run on the TV, MP-homescreen or MP displaying TV etc.
Even the black background, when nothing is running on this part of the extended desktop, reverses to something like a dirty green, brown or orange colour.
The other two parts of the windows desktop (primary and touchscreen as secondary) are not affected, but they are running over the other graphics-adapter (ATI HD 4550).

At the moment I have set the graphics-card in ATI-CCC to output RGB 4:4:4/studio-output and in the last 24 hours the colour reversal didn't happen anymore.
But I know definitely that I have had it earlier with RGB 4:4:4.
And I really would like to have it to work correctly with YCrCb 4:4:4 output because I think with this format the least transformations of/in the colour-space are made.

The question is, if any kind of logs could show something about this behaviour.
I think that the ATI-driver is causing this.
It definitely has nothing to do with MP.
It happens whatever video-codec I use, so I think the cause must be in the last part of the chain to the TV and that is the ATI-driver.

    Kind regards

    Roger

    Hi again Roger

The question is, if any kind of logs could show something about this behaviour.
Our logs are very unlikely to be able to help you with this. Maybe check the system event logs.

I think that the ATI-driver is causing this.
    Agreed.

It definitely has nothing to do with MP.
    Agreed. :)

All that I can really recommend is that you report this issue to ATI/AMD (link to Catalyst Crew Feedback -->here<--) and hope that they will look into it.

    Hi mm,

    thanks for your support.
Luckily at the moment the strange behaviour is gone with RGB and YCrCb.

Perhaps telekinetally solved by you :)

If it returns, I will report it to Catalyst Crew Feedback

    Kind regards

    Roger

    AW: TV temporarily reverses colours

Been there done that. It is definitely a ATI drivers problem with the driver being unable to read the EDID information submitted by the Philips TV correctly. I have struggled with this problem for weeks resulting in changing from an AMD E350 system to a Intel/Nvidia combo. There is no other solution to this problem as the Catalyst drivers team doing their job and releasing a bug-free driver.

My individual problem was that it worked on RGB 4:4:4 Full but the driver occasionally changed automatically to YCbCr 4:4:4 during watching resulting in reversed colors and my family getting angry at me.

During my research in the internet I found out that former Catalyst drivers some years ago had the same problem. Then it was fixed, some time later it was introduced again and not fixed until today. Funnily on some combinations of ATI hardware, Catalyst drivers and Philips TV it will work on others it will not.

I have no faith the Catalyst drivers team will fix that anytime soon as I already reported this some months ago to the team. Also I made a post on the ATI forums. No reply. Finally I have had it and changed my hardware over to Intel CPU/NVidia graphics. It was more expensive but I have no troubles anymore.

    Hi BlueMax1916,

    :D for your detailed information.
This confirms the suspected root of the problem and lessens my hope for a remedy by ATI/AMD :-(

Strangely, as I wrote in my last post, momentarily the colour-reversal is gone (September 2011 version of catalyst driver).
Perhaps it's an inidividual combination of settings in CCC that makes it happen or not happen?
Hope it remains at the momentary status.

Otherwise I probably also will change to NVIDIA.

    Kind regards

    Roger
