I took your advice and tried a COMPLETE reinstall, however I got the same issue. Googling the issue lead me to this forum:
Unhandled exception terminated SharpDevelop - at app startup - SharpDevelop Community

Which suggested that I just cut the lines out of the machine.config file. I did this, and the install worked fine. Do you know why each installation (6+ now) of 3.5 SP1 produced the same results which were incompatible with your installer? I don't know anything about this stuff, or why cutting those lines out actually helped. Maybe you can provide me with an answer?
