Thanks for the reply ;) I tried using MPA, but this did not help. I had AC3Filter installed, but this didn't work with DTS passthrough enabled either. ffdshow also failed with the DTS option enabled. I did not try reclock having read some comments in the thread linked at the bottom of this reply! I used the image of my 0.2.2.0 config and updated it to MP 1.0.2 to test and also had a PowerDVD 7 install on that HDD. Setting the audio to PDVD7 worked  ... but when I examined the codec graph it showed AC3Filter as the active codec, not PDVD7 which had been set in the MP configuration :S I've just tested two mkv files (one with DTS the other with AC3 Dolby) and they both play without stutter and my optical connection the the AV receiver is OK. I don't understand why MP 1.0.2 behaves differently with regards to DTS passthrough and I have still to test this on a clean install of XP SP3. The new HTPC is located elsewhere and it will be a while before I can get to it. It uses MP 1.0.1. I am grateful for the support and for the suggestions in the following thread :- https://forum.team-mediaportal.com/general-support-51/mkv-files-dts-sound-irregular-movement-travelling-scenes-59099/ ... many thanks all :)
