The topic title is directly from my Mediaportal.log file. I've tried to troubleshoot myself, but sadly I just can't figure out what's causing this. It's becoming quite the annoyance now.

Typical scenario:

I show my kids a couple of Spongebob episodes (SD xvid) then when they've gone to bed me and my girlfriend watch a couple of TV episodes (720p mkv) but after a while I can't get playback to work, I get a popup saying "Playback failed, codec: avc" or whatever coded the episode has.

Last night I had a look at the logs and I found this "VideoPlayer: Unable to play with reason - Ran out of memory" in MediaPortal.log at the instant where I got the Playback message (bigger log snippet below in collapsed text starting as I stopped the successfully played episode before the failing one). I also checked in error.log and it looked like this (I tried playing the file several times, hence the repeated message):

This has been discussed over at the LAV doom9 forum and seems to relate to newer Nvidia drivers not releasing gpu memory after the 27x.xx series, so it affects 280.xx onwards, 290.53 seems fine, then broken again in 295.51

Still, it's a driver released by NVIDIA, perhaps that's the whole reason for this issue I'm having? A quick restart of MediaPortal fixes this, but it's not very WAF/GAF.

When did you upgrade the driver, was it working fine before with same codecs, which I uninstall when upgrading to new driver and then reinstall once done now, this relates to a driver I tried around November, went to play video and got the message unable to play file, uninstalled Lav filters and then reinstalled and all was fine again.

History:

I had a 9400 GT card with GeForce drivers (no newer GeForce non-beta drivers where available through the NVDIA Control Panel at the time of installing the new 430 card), then I got a 430 card (listed in my System Specs) instead and went with the modified TESLA drivers as recommended in the hardware section here. I've had issues with OnlineVideos 1.0.0. crashing with SAF6 installed (playing back 720p material) and I solved that by uninstalling SAF6 and using only the LAVF mpei installer instead and configuring the filter to use CUDA. I don't remember having these issues when using SAF6, but that was with my old video card. I wonder if DXVA2 would work better than CUDA in this case? Or maybe trying the latest SAF6 again...

Stick with cuvid, you will not be able to play any VC1 content without it, as it does not work any other way currently.

Can you do a little test, play video with task manager open on the performance tab, watch the nonpaged memory and see if that just keeps rising, any player will do.

Wondering if this could just be related to XP + driver, aa far as I know Owlsroost and the rest use Win7.

Actually I use Vista, but it's the same drivers as Win7 (and the XP drivers are different).

Why not try running GPU-Z alongside MP and see if the GPU memory usage keeps increasing ?

You can use that to see if graphics memory is getting wiped out, but the problem that started supposedly with the 280.xx series of drivers regarding eating video memory will also wipe out the shared total memory allocated which mine is 1279 including the 512 from the graphics card, so can be viewed from Task manager with the option "always on top" set, ideal if proving that some how MP is at fault, you can watch memory rising in the performance tab.

So what has been reported over at the nvidia forums, if playing video using any player ie WMP, then nonpaged memory increrases, so I suggest Emph does a 15 minute test using that, If the memory does not stay stabilized after a couple of minutes, then there is a problem with driver, if it does remain stable, then repeat using MP and see if task manager shows memory use increasingi.

Sadly GPU-Z does not have a always on top\or OSD feature, so unless you are using windowed mode, then hard to monitor, EVGA Prescision has osd for reporting real time info, but that's another discussion.
