I have just install MediaPortal. However, I am not able to play videos. All my videos are of .avi format. This format is in the list of Video Extensions. When I click 'play' on a video, nothing happens. What should I be looking for?

Do you have the relevant codecs installed to play these files, if that confuses you, then search with google for Vista Codec Pack (xp fine with this, its just a name), this will play most video formats by default within Windows\Mediaportal.

No luck. I have installed the codec pack and am able to play the videos in Windows Media Player. I still can't play them in MediaPortal.

OK can you collect logs, theres a tool in your START menu\mediaportal called logs collector, follow the instructions and then upload as per my signature.

What other multimedia software have you got installed, because it is interfering with windows processes that allow any software to access files.

Hello,

I have exactly the same problem as reported by raora.
I'm also running MP 1.0.0.0 on WinXP SP3 (Home) over an Athlon XP-M 2500+ with 768MB RAM and Mobility Radeon 9200.
Installed players other than MP are Windows Media Player 11 and an Acer version of CyberLink PowerDvd 4.00
It does not look like a codecs problem (I tried different ones and videos play well with Windows Media Player).
I attach my logs too... hope it helps.

Hi.
I too have the same problem running Mp 1.0 on Vista Ultimate. The only way for me is using external player to playback (using MPC HC)

You need to install a video codec (i.e ffdshow) that can decode the movie inside your AVI file. The movie can be a divx, xvid, or uncompressed video file depending on which compression scheme was used to create your AVI file.

If your movie is a divx/xvid file, install ffdshow and disable the Divx, Xvid video codecs. Configure raw video to "all supported". Next, setup ffdshow to decode mp1, mp2, and mp3 audio. Next, install the latest Divx codecs. Finally, setup the audio decoder for MP movie player to use ffdshow. You can leave the video decoder as MPV.

When you play your AVI file, ffdshow audio and Divx will load automatically. The trick here is for ffdshow to load after the Divx codec has started so that MP doesn't lose focus.
