I've just installed a brand new version of MP (1.12.0) onto a freshly created Win7 machine. The install went fine, but when I try to play a recorded video, the screen goes dark for a moment (as though it's going to play), but then I'm immediately brought back to the list of videos. Now what's really odd is that I connected to this machine via Remote Desktop Connection, fired up MP and was able to play a video. Since it was sending it through my LAN line, it was slow and jerky, but it WAS displaying.
This is happening with .mkv and .avi files.

have you ever started mediaportal config tool? checked codecs - renderer settings uses EVR?

I have used the config tool, but I wasn't sure what to change in the codecs and renderer area.

EVR was selected. I switched it to VMR9, and the problem remains.

I wonder if I wouldn't be better off finding an old copy of MP that I could install. It seemed to work right out of the box without the necessity of any extensive knowledge of this level of video science.

Ok, I think the problem isn't MP. If I change the sound from HDMI audio to Speakers, videos star up ok. I'll continue working on that.

VMR9 is not recommended to use under Vista+ OSes.

Was HDMI connected while you tried to play it?
If there are cases when HDMI isn't connected, then i would recommend to use "default directsound device" as audio rendere and set HDMI as default rendere in OS - so you will always get an audiorenderer available.

The problem turned out to be the latest video drivers for my card were faulty. I had to uninstall them and let MS install its own drivers. Then everything worked fine.

That said, I think I still need to find an older version of MP, as I don't think my machine is powerful enough to run the new one. I'm able to start up videos, but they stutter a lot at the beginning and the audio doesn't sync up with the video until about 20 seconds in.

i don't believe that new version of MediaPortal 1 does playing of videos slower than older version of MP1.
I would first check if you have enabled DXVA native in LAV Video settings, exclude MP, Timeshift and recordings folders from antivirus software, set energy saving mode to "maximum performance" and then try to play video again.

Thanks, I'll try to check all of that. My HTPC doubles as my work file server, so I can't do it till later. I have to reboot to the newly formatted and installed drive to do any testing. Still working off the old drive till I get everything working properly.
