what codec is being used when the files are playing? You can check this with GraphEdit.

I managed to force coreavc usage, by disabling x264 in ffdshows option.

After doing that, in combination with the reg. settings above, I found my picture became really black.

I found that CoreAVC was using colour range, auto. I moved it to PC, and things look good again.

Hi Guys

I wonder If you can help or If I should post a separate thread - Im having exactly the same problems in that playing MKV files the black scenes are extremely black to the extent I cant make anything out, in the light scenes the picture Is great with no problems. I have been using mediaportal for a few years with no problems but this has beat me, the only thing I have changed with the set up is that I upgraded the ATI drivers to the latest version 8.6, I have now reverted back to the older drivers but the problem still remains. If I adjust the gamma in the ATI control panel It does help but It then affects the whole picture, If I play the movies outside of mediaportal in MPC the picture looks spot on with no problems.
Im using Mediaportal RC1 with CoreAVC and ffdshow my Graphics card is a ATI X700

If anybody can help I would very appreciative

Thanks for your reply egg - I had a go with some of the things you mentioned - coreavc was already being used as the default codec to play my MKV's but i double checked as you mentioned It. I have got round It by raising the desktop gamma in the ATI control panel which looks a bit garish on the desktop but once a movie Is playing the black scenes are more watchable and I can at least make out what Is going on now :) Thanks for your help anyway

ok, but what setting was there for the input/output range? (can find in the coreavc setting panel)
