I will keep this as simple as i can

I raised a feature request last year, and someone told me it would be in media Portal 2 ( I had great excitement ). And then tonight i read the developers schedule and find out Media Portal 2 will not be available for 4 years

I am not a programmer " actually I am a senior systems engineer", but in the end up. can it not be decided by the community at large to stop enhancements to version 1 so that the developers ( who i understand have little time as it is ) can work exclusively on version 2.

Lets face it, "Version1 is excellent" and most of the additional tweaks and even most bugs are a time waster when compared to the larger scope

I love media portal - but this time line for release is toooo long ( even though i understand its reasoning) I don't know if i can stay loyal to this, specifically because of the feature set i wish to see in v2 far out weighs the little bugs that appear ( P.S to date i have only experienced one )

It may just be me, and i invite feedback for discussion, so i dont seem like i am ranting

Regards, Alan

    Hi Alan,

As you may know, the Team MediaPortal is made of volunteers, and even the team manager dont say "do it". We don't work like this.

That's says, I can understand your frustration. But please understand that re-creating that kind of software from about nothing is not easy at all. Albert (and the others) has made a great job, but as MP2 was not ready, the team choose to focus on MP1 until now, to provide new releases (like the near 1.2.0 beta), with new features and less bugs, and it's a big work too...

About MP2 : The release date is not set for now, but in our bug tracker, we have to put a date, and 2015 or 2016 was choose randomly. Don't pay attention on it.

Everything I can say about MP2 for now is that the core is getting more and more stable, with a fast skin engine. But there's again some major bugs to correct, and we are working on it, to provide the better version as possible.

We want you to have a great experience on MP2 at the first time, this is our goal.

    Regards, Alan

There's no reason to be angry...

    Cheers.

Kinda have to agree. I really appreciate the development of MP1/2, but maybe the devs should concentrate on what makes MP different to MCE & XBMC. No point copying what the others a doing. But let's face it, if MP did not have a variety of plugins (the main ones being TV-Series and Moving Pictures) and the TV-Server then we'd see much less MP users.

Maybe a brand new TV-server rather than a brand new MP would be the most effective way to go?!

There will be a new Tv Server in MP2 ;)
In general MP2 is like MP1 (Client & Server, Plugins, Multiseat and so on...), but if you have a closer look there are some major differences (don't want to list them all again... just use the search a bit ;) )

The differences between MP and XBMC aren't the Plugins, the difference is that XBMC has no native Tv Server ;) If you want to have a MediaPC with Tv support under windows MP is your best choice ;) Otherwise you have to use Linux and MythTv, but there are some other problems...

I'm testing MP2 for a while now and there are a lot of improvements, just check out the current git version, compile it and see how far MP2 is =)

For me XBMC has one major advantage and that is the speed.

With MP2 speed is only one aspect... The switch to MPF to an UPnP based architecture and a fully integrated network spanned database will lead to the best client/server media center we've ever seen.

Except the XBMC diskless setup XBMC has nothing like such a client/server infrastructure and with the roadmap in mind for me it seems the tv part will need much time.

And just to clarify my standpoint... For me it's irrelevant which media center is superior as long any of them is able to fulfill my needs.

Exactly my point. Why not improve or recode a good feature? I think one of the MP2 devs mentioning that a new TV-Server will not be released with MP2 but may be done after MP2.

That's right :) MP2 is already Server & Client, but at the moment the server hasn't that much functionality, it provides the data structure, like movie lists, file access and so on, but no Tv yet. At the beginning MP2 will use the Tv Server + Tv4Home from MP1 for Tv and after some time the server of MP2 will be expanded with the Tv functionality.

Please don't get me wrong, but isn't that a step backwards with regards to what distinguished MP from other HTPC software?

It's not ideal but the fact is that we don't have the necessary manpower to develop the new tvserver for now. And just continue using the current tv-server directly would be even worse because it has some fundamental flaws and the code base is very messy in various parts of the tvserver.

So for now this is the best solution available because a) we (morpheus_xx ;)) can start developing the client plugin and define clean interfaces that we can later use with a rewritten tv server and b) we don't carry on the legacy from the old system because we use an abstraction layer (tv4home).
