Can the 2008 SP1 version of the VC Redist file be used instead of the automatically downloaded 2005 version?
ie, if I install the 2008 SP1 VC Redist before installing Media Portal, will all work out? Or will it also install the 2005 redist like it always does?

Directshow filters (and fewother C++ components) are linked agains VS 2005 SP1 redist libraries. So, you will always need to have those installed to be able to use MediaPortal.

VS2005 SP1 and VS2008 (SP1) aren't conflicting each other so you can have those both installed.
