How do your subtitles work with MPC-HC? also I go stricly with 1080p @ highest resolution available usually 10-16GB CoreAVC has been my choice but lately there latest builds are just lacking in terms of performance, FFDShow just sutters for me. does MPC-HC support Dual Core processing? Sorry @ everyone for this topic going way off course, I just figure its pointless to make a new thread for this stuff.

Subtitles I use VSFilter (DirectVobSub) for, as I prefer to keep things seperate. You do need EVR for DXVA to remain usable with subtitles, so this only works on Vista/Win7.

And it is not so much about filesize as it is about bitrate. I've seen 8GB files that bring many codecs to their knees, because they have 50Mbps scenes in them. And my memories on software decoder stats on my HTPC are faded memories, because that one is a BE-2400 dual-core and I never really had any problems with it, and run DXVA on that one now for a long time (over 3 years).

So do you really have such anchient hardware that you can not use DXVA? Use DXVAChecker otherwise to diagnose. Even on an extreme high bitrate test file that I got, the CPU barely has to break a sweat as the GPU is doing all the decoding.

I prefer not to use DXVA if my system can handle it on its own, i have run some dxva on another system and Some of the movies dont work, not sure why but it just doesnt seem like my best option, I have HTPC's and over 8TB of mkv's so its a little late for me to be switching major components in and out, each system would need a new graphics card.

Wierd, I've been using DXVA since the nVidia 8000 series introduced it (nVidia called it "PureVideo HD" back then, before Microsoft coded in support in DirectX), and have switched to AMD HD4000 when I put low power at a higher priority. But anyway, I guess you prefer to use a very expensive CPU to do the software decoding, as a minimum of 3Ghz dual-core is needed to barely decode high bitrate H.264, then a $20 GPU that can do it much faster.

So just do a software comparison yourself then. As I said before, the MPC-HC application can be used to test, doesn't require any installation and it relies on the internal filters first, assuming u don't adjust settings, so it will not use CoreAVC/etc. Then just compare that to CoreAVC via the CPU results gathered from the performance monitor in Task Manager, and you will know what works best for you.

.. regarding the original post.. another thing I found u may need to do to 'get rid' of the taskbar showing, is to switch it to the classical taskbar view. I had to do this because I didn't want MP to be 'always on top' due to needing external players to be on top at times.
