Autologin + the good old Kiosk Mode. Policy Editor -> Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Custom User Interface. If you need to go back to the Desktop, you would have to start an explorer task of course. I use a small batch file for Custom User Interface in my living room for ages. Just a few switches which power down the system on MP exit or start an explorer task. No biggie. Kiosk Mode stuff can be found all over the net with a lot of wrapper scripts. I also use some custom error level when existing to launch Chrome for example and then go back to MP. Just some basic scripting. Power Shell is really convenient here. Also what still should work in RTM are the shell registry keys, if you want to set the Shell manually to what ever you like (Example for classic Desktop)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "Shell"="explorer.exe /select,explorer.exe" [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "Shell"="explorer.exe /select,explorer.exe"
There are also new options in the Policy - at least on the Server 2012. I think they are not in the local policy editor, but it should be possible to set the registry keys. Haven't audited the registry settings yet, but they should be the above ones. At least you can skip Metro on boot up. Haven't check if there is more shell stuff options now. Too lazy as I like using Metro. Never liked Start Menu Concept anyway - it was wrong from the beginning from an UI perspective. People just got used to it. But it was once of the worst decision in UI design. As said you can set the startup shell to anything you want for ages. Still works under Win8. Don't believe all the press hype. Negative messages causing clicks. So they jump on every stupid blog entry without testing.
