    Hi All,

I have a fairly stable system now, thanks to this forum and the helpful posts in it :D It will resume from sleep to record, then go back to sleep afterwards.

The only thing that is bugging me at the moment (not a MediaPortal thing, but probably an OS/driver issue) is the lost connection on the wireless adapter when the system resumes from S3 sleep mode. I was hoping that Vista SP2 would help with this issue (many people have had problems with disconnected wireless after resuming, and Vista SP2 was supposed to contain fixes to several sleep/resume problems), but unfortunately it hasn't helped in my case.

I have a Netgear Rangemax WNR834B v2 router on my main PC (connected to the internet via cable modem) and a USB WN111 wireless adapter connected to the HTPC. The Netgear site mentions that they 'work with Vista', but I am beginning to think that what I have isn't a good choice when using sleep mode. The wireless connection works very well after a reboot, but once the HTPC goes to sleep it won't reconnect to the network after resuming.

What I'd like to know from the people here: do you have a wireless network adapter that DOES work (successfully reconnect) after resuming from sleep? If so, what brand and did you need to change any registry settings?

The other option might be to do something similar to the TV service PowerScheduler plugin, where an option to restart the TV service on resume is currently available. Could a similar 'reset upon resume' option be implemented for wireless network adapters? I have been searching for a while now for a script to do this (which I could then add to the TV setup section after setting 'restart service after resume'). I haven't had any success with finding a suitable script though :(

I haven't added logs here as I don't think they'd be of use, being more likely an OS/driver issue. I can add some if required.

Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

I have a Netgear Rangemax WNR834B v2 router on my main PC (connected to the internet via cable modem) and a USB WN111 wireless adapter connected to the HTPC.

The WPN311 is sooo much better, the usb version I also had issues with.

But just to be safe, as all my setups are totally singleseat, I have installed the MSLoopback device (see useful posts, newcomers forum), just in case my signal drops out.

    Regards

Thanks for your quick reply PD!

Oddly enough, I originally purchased a WN311B wireless adapter to go with the WNR834Bv2 router. I think the WN311B differs from the WPN311 only by the antenna.

To be honest, I cannot remember whether it had any sleep/resume issues (I was more focused on getting MP set up at the time). I decided to go with a USB option as the PCI network adapter was sitting very close to my passive video card heatsink - which made me nervous.

Also, I implemented the 'MSLoopback adapter' early on when I noticed it in one of your earlier posts. This has certainly fixed the problem of losing the TVserver connection for me :)

I will reinstall the WN311B tonight and see how it goes. Will report back with results.

    Regards

Let Windows install the device, Atheros the chip maker released a new driver in the last month (if its the same), so should auto detect, also use Vista's own wireless connection wizard to set things up, rather than the netgear wizard, which had a bad habit of forgetting settings

After reinstalling the WN311B wireless adapter, as per your instructions, all is working well :D

    I tested 2 ways:

    1. Let MP sleep via the PowerScheduler plugin. Resumed using the remote and the network adapter icon temporarily had a red cross (no connection), then changed back to a blue globe (internet connected).

    2. Pressed Standby button on remote (I realise this is a no-no in Vista at the moment for MediaPortal, but gave it a go anyway). Then resumed using the remote with the same results as test 1 above.

    All working well now. :D

After a bit more digging around, I noticed that both the WN111 (USB) and WN311B (PCI) are supported on Vista x64 with their latest drivers - which I had installed. This could mean a hardware (mobo?) or other issue related to USB devices when entering and resuming from S3 sleep mode. Anyway, I will keep the USB adapter on the shelf for the time being and use the WN311B in the HTPC.

It's usb alright, the via usb controller that comes with the T500 is the main culprit, do not even bother trying Win7, as the T500 will not allow shutdown or suspend (tried myself0, there's a long post regarding this on the Hauppauge forum.

Thanks for the heads up with Win7. I guess the T500 is a few years old now - looks like an upgrade will be in order down the track.
Could it be fixed by a driver update for Win7, or is it more complicated than that?

I have a reasonably stable system now (still a few minor glitches, but not show-stoppers), so I will leave it as is for a while.

Actually Ray, it looks a bit like the T-500 in architecture terms - 2 x USB tuners (AfaTech AF9015's) and a VIA PCI USB host controller - PEAKHARDWARE (I was thinking about buying one so I had a dig around the driver download files).

That said, I run a USB dual tuner dongle with the AF9015 chipset, and it's always behaved itself with suspend/resume under Vista - performance is good too :)

    MLH01,
It could conceivably be fixed with a driver update so that it handles re-initialization after sleep better. I got my D-Link DWA-160 wifi adapter to almost instantly reconnect after waking from sleep (less than 5 seconds). Heck, after poking around the technet forums ( Windows Vista IT Pro Category ) for a bit I got everything to even Hibernate and wake on schedule correctly with the WiFi popping right back on. However I have a different mobo and chipset than you, so it could be (like you said) related to that.
