with new tv engine will their be shared databases? (1 Viewer)

i just read the tv engine news on the front page - it's sounding excellent so far! I'm just wondering how the move to server->client operation will affect the mp databases?
For instance, will the tvguide be stored on the server? Would this mean only needing to grab/import the guide on the server for all clients to have a full guide listing?
Is there long term plans on making the server more than just a tv server? I'd love to see all the mp databases moved to the server, so i only need to update one db for new music, recordings, movies, etc...

I love the possibilities the new tvengine creates and can't wait to start playing with it!!

from what i understand it i think this is how they are planning on doing it, obviously its just what i think so dont' take it as gospel. I think the plan is that running as a service essentially you have MP installed on teh server and all the databases reside on the server as well as say the tvguide and the clients basically are sort of pointed/mapped to this location to access the information, so everyone technically would have all the same recorded shows

Sorry if I am using this thread to ask my own question about the new TV engine but it is related so...

So if the server is doing all the work and the client is showing the information, will it be possible in the future to use a good powerfull server as the server PC and a lighter less powerfull client as the client PC...in the terms of mini-ITX??

A dedicated server wouldn't need to be powerful unless you're compressing video, just tuner cards and storage, and won't require a good graphics card. Client computers wouldn't need to be overly powerful either, but will still require a DX9 graphics card for displaying the MP interface (unless you used VNC instead).

From what I can tell the new MP server will be running the MS SQL Express Edition as the backend database so I would think it would be fair that all databases will be moved from current SQLlite to MS SQL.

You client machine will still need to be capable of decoding media that is being played and with the MP interface using DirectX you will still require a decent dx9 video card. Things you wont need in the client are large amounts of storage and tv cards. This being said your backend server will not need to be of very high standard either as capturing from MPEG cards is not that CPU intensive and you may not be playing back media on your backend which means you can use a log grade video card. I would think the SQL server will consume more ram than the current setup and you will need a decent spec machine if you plan on running frontend and backend on the one machine and then also have other simultaneos clients accessing the backend.

Anyway this is just my take on things and by no means correct.

I'm really excited about this. Technically by the sound of it, you could build a very small not to powerful server with just your TV card for capture, run a network storage device for holding all of your material, have small DX9 capable clients for playback.
