XP vs VISTA for MP? (1 Viewer)

Ive decided to upgrade my HTPC so that its got sufficient hardware to run blu-ray.

Prior to this it wasnt a consideration to run vista as the machine's hardware would have made it sluggish.

With the upgrade, though, Ill have the option.

Reading through the posts on here, it seems a lot of people have had trouble with MP & Vista.

My personal preference is for XP, if for nothing else than that Ive been able to get it to boot faster and has been generally more responsive on my other machines.

Before I install an OS, I thought I might put the question though;

-Is there any advantage to using Vista over XP for MP-dedicated machine?

-Does dx10.1 offer any advantage over 9.0c for a media centre pc?

thanks. I had read the first thread but hadnt seen the second one. Very interesting to see the transition from the pre sp1 days (and a lot of misconception about the OS) to more recent posts where there seemed to be a better understanding of its strengths and weaknesses. The balance of later opinion seems to side with Vista. Anyone else care to comment?

I'm using Vista and can't fault mediaportal for all the necessary functions. I even got a new tuner I expected wouldn't be supported (PxDTV1300T) and it was a perfect addition. I didn't get a chance to run it on XP as I had upgraded to vista business before I found mediaportal. My reason for using MP over MCE was the cost of upgrading to Vista Ultimate. It works so well that all the issues I have read about XP's compatibility it would be a no brainer for me.

when it comes to vista: does it matter if it is 64bit or 32bit? my new pc would come with vista home premium 64bit.

are there complications with a 64bit vista compared to a 32bit version?

getting 64-bit drivers for yr tv cards may be an issue.

thanks for the reply. i know mp is not available in a 64bit version, i was just wondering if there are problems running mp on a 64bit machine since some apps have no problem at all, while others just won't work right

the tv card is included in the pc (acer aspire L5100 II) so i guess it must be supported by the os

I am struggling to have the mediaportal installed on XP Pro Sp2 64 bit. The earlier versions (before 1.0 Rc1), gave warnings but the install went through. The later versions stop the installation after giving an OS warning. I currently have the 0.2 stable version and appears to be working okay (no tv tuner card) with few minor glitches with plugins.

I have been trying to get more info on why XP 64 bit OS is not supported. I have read few reviews which indicate few users have been turned off due to the 64 bit OS limitation. Any workaround would be great, but declining the install altogether appears to be on the offensive side.

thats actually _really_ useful to know as the copy I have is 64-bit.

i suppose there might be difference between xp 64bit and vista 64bit. i think i'll try it and report back
