FINALLY

Hallelujah - I finally got it!!

I did a full uninstall and cull of everything, and copied my old backup to a zip file (just in case). I did a very thorough scour of the registry for "mediaportal" and then again for "portal" just in case...

I rebooted, and then put on 2.1, and presto - working like a charm!!

No idea what the problem was in the end, but all is well now, I've patched to the latest SVN and all seems lovely.

I guess the lesson to be learned is, if at first you don't succeed, try, try again (and if that doesn't work, post to a website help board, and then keep trying until the bloody thing finally works!!) ;)

Thanks for your help Marcus!!

I had similar problem when i upgraded to 2.1 from 2.0.4 - when you uninstall MP it doesn't delete everything out of it's installation folder - it still leaves 19mb worth of files in there, which are the cause of the problem.

I uninstalled again, and then renamed the folder, and then reinstalled MP - no need to reboot, this time it worked, so its definitely something to with it not uninstalling itself properly.

There was no need to change anything in the registry, it's litterally down to the installation folder problem

I had previously deleted everything from the folder though. That was the odd part!! Something I deleted this time finally did it though, whatever the little devil-of-a-file was!!

Glad to hear it's all good now. I know how frustrating that can be.
As for the uninstall not deleting everyhthing, that is the intended behaviour.
Uninstall deletes any program specific things, but your settings an such should not be deleted. They remain, along with your databases, thumbnails etc.
Just deleting the folder after an uninstall should have bee enough, not sure why it wasn't in your case.

i think that's the problem, if you uninstall 2.0.4 and then install 2.1 it hangs if you weren't using the default skin, I couldn't get in to configure it either because of this.
