Didnt know how to word the title but just wondering when a recording is made with MP is it recorded in its original source format / quality

ie if I record a channel being broadcast in 1080i, does the recording record it at this resolution, allowing me to playback in 1080i or are the recordings scaled down a bit to keep them smaller?

for Digital TV, as far as I am aware, MP just saves the signal as it is received. there is no on the fly compression with digital.
This means that a big cpu isn't really needed, but a big hdd is
