I am forced to using ffdshow and not ATI's h/w decoding & deinterlacing. When using h/w deinterlacing, the TV video does not fill the entire screen, a large black border surrounds the video and the size of this varies between some channels. Noticeably some of the Discovery channels have a much smaller video size, it literally does only take up about 50% of my 42" 1080P display...

I have double checked and my GPU output is set to 1920x1080 with deinterlacing turned on...

Any ideas? I tried tackling this problem in the past and arrived at a dead end, I'm hopping I can finally sort this problem out which will also lead to my non-smooth picture problems...

Does this happen with SD and HD content? Which codec exactly do you (want) to use, the ATi MPEG one?

Which-ever codec looks best. I've tried the PDVD's one's so far. It happens with SD channels only (which is everything other than BBC HD)...

The video simply doesn't fill the entire screen despite the entire screen being available to it...

Remember that some broadcasters are sending letter boxed material (black are outside the video content). Make a small recording and use some other media player to make sure that it's not that whats causing the issue you are seeing.

Letterbox as in widescreen (16:9 or 16:10, etc)? I'm definitely sure of this... It's literally a border around the entire image around 20cm wide...

Letterbox as in "widescreen content reduced to 4:3". But I doubt that this is the case here :)

I have had the exact same problem during DVD playback and have never been able to resolve it. I ended up using zoom-mode, which of course is totally unsatisfying...

The odd thing here is that all DVD's, MKV's and most TV channels are perfect. Only a set few channels have very small video sizes... You don't get this problem with these channels on cable/sky boxes...

I'm sorry to say I don't use my HTPC for TV just yet, I will be shortly but so far I mostly use it for x264 playback.
