    Hello guy's.

    i want make my own TVE Server.
    the goal is to make one system without screen / keyboard / mouse.
    and maybe can be used for streaming on Tablet / phone

    my goal is to re-use my existing card. and maybe to look for future change. PCIE card replacement ...
    the server should be used only for TVE / MP2 server, and maybe an small virtual OS.

    I would avoid these.

    Oh, the J1900 really is powerful with really low energy consumption (below 10 Watts). It has way more CPU and GPU Power than needed for a TV Server only...

    I had a Celeron 847 running as TVE3.0- and MP2- Server and as NAS (all at the same time) for years and it always was strong enough. The J1900 has 4-6 times the power of the 847, so lots of extra power available. Indeed the J1900 easy is strong enough for a MP1 client, the most power consuming software aside of the MediaBrowser3 Server in the HTPC world.

    The only usecase where none of azzuro's options are strong enough is streaming to smartphones or tablets via MPExtended. For this I won't recommend anything below a "mid-range" Core i3. If you need to do two streams at the same time, even an i5 like mine reaches it's limits.

    There are two possibilities to watch Live TV on Android or iOS Devices via MPExtended. One way is to directly deliver the original stream. This is the same as watching Live TV on a "normal" Windows PC, so not much power needed. But you need a strong tablet for this. As example my Tablet (2 Ghz QuadCore CPU and GPU able to display resolutions above "Full HD") can handle direct streams without issues. So I can use 4 or 5 of them at the same time (as long as the Wlan is fast enough) But other, not that powerful devices like my smartphone are not able to do so. For those devices the Server needs to recode the LiveTV "on the fly" to a format the phone can handle. As you can imagine, recoding of (worst case scenario) 1080i HDTV needs a lot of CPU power, if you need to do it fast (faster than real time as you need some extra buffer)... And with two devices you need double the power, with 3 you need it three times,...

    BTW I'm not using aMPdroid on my tablet, I'm using the full blown "XBMC/Kodi for Android" on it as MP client. Works like a charm.

    thank you for clarification.
    all my system use gigabit wires. excepted Wifi device. phone & ( none tablet yet).

    the price is also to consider ...
    i don't want buy one system to be good for the trash in 2-3 years.
    i must update the post#1 and list the price for each system ( based price available in france )

    i must try to use mpextended on my sempron. for look what system power is needed, Oupff i think i will take time and to be patient.

    Hi there,

    Transcoding/streaming will the be most CPU intensive operation the server can do. My i7 will handle 6 streams ok (tested with MPExtended/ffmpeg) - Admittedly in real life I wont ever have that many streams, probably 2, but I thought I would test it :)

    My server runs MB3, Sabnzbd, Couchpotato, Sickbeard, MP2 Server, MP1 Server, MPExtended, SQL Server - It idles at 38W (a bit higher than you probably wanted). Most the time it's about 3% CPU lol

    Maybe I'm just biased and out of touch. :)

    FWIW IMHO performance of TVE core benefits more from faster clock speeds than more cores. However a lot depends on:
    • number of simultaneous clients
    • soft decryption
    • use of transcoding with MPExtended
    • use of software encoders for analog TV and/or FM radio
    Either way, almost anything has got to be better than the current Sempron + green HDD + 1GB RAM.

    PS: Don't forget the HDD/SDD. That can make a big difference.
