They simply disappear as the old style left menus when unfocused. They slide out only when you change the screen as the old Black glass skin. This new menu system enables the slide out animation when the pointer or the focus is over another control outside the menu buttons. For me, this has been a quite tricky challenge... lasted almost a year of experimentations!
