Remux the video with something like mkvmerge, takes a minute, thats all.

If it's only the one file do above, should correct any read errors in the file header.

PD - I do have GraphStudio, but am unable to attach to the MP graph (see my post here). Any ideas on how to sort this out?

Remuxed to mkv, and it did fix the problem: the resulting mkv played back perfectly. I was also able to get GraphStudio to attach to MP's filter graph ... am attaching it here for reference.

The curious thing is that even though both the original mp4 and the remuxed mkv result in the same filter graph, the former shows only black screen with sound, while the latter plays back normally under MP. (Both play back perfectly outside MP, of course). I'm using Haali for splitting both mp4 and mkv containers.

Also, I tried to verify possible header corruption on the original mp4 using a test box running MP on XP (same codecs/splitters/settings/etc.) and the file played back normally under MP.

Very strange indeed.

Yes it is strange that MP runs into a snag when it tries to play your original MP4 file. Since MP can playback MKV files, it sort of "disguises" your MP4 until it's ready to be decoded.
