I was editing my post above as you were typing yoursI'm thinking that Media Center "unlocks" the tuner as it pairs with the device (probably some sort of key exchange or something). This allows DRM'd content to be transmitted, but Media Center still has to decode the resultant stream into something usable (something I'm assuming using the right filtergraph is doing).
We are thinking the same thing I believe. Which would mean Media Center would have to be installed on your MediaPortal PC in order to use this card. And even then, we might be breaking some kind of DRM license agreement doing that.
Does anyone know if the hdhomerun prime can get video into MediaPortal if Media Center was never installed? I really have no interest in messing with this PlayReady DRM.
FWIW, I'm actually running 1.3 Alpha, not the beta. Guide coloring is not that important to me, and I miss some of the other features (Titan), but having CableCard is awesome.
I feel that the Media Center did a better pairing job the CableCard. Before I ran the Media Center wizard, MediaPortal was able to use the CableCard and get video from all the channels, but it would have to be reset every hour. It seemed as if something in the key exchange wasn't happening. Once I ran the Media Center Wizard, everything was fine past the hour marker and I was able to kill the Media Center services.
I do know that Verizon FiOS (that I have) has a huge number of copy-freely channels, which is why I wanted to go this route. This post had some information.
