Calling all MP New Zealanders (Both of you!!) (26 Viewers)

Wondering if anyone has any ideas to fix a picture problem. (I have posted this on geekzone too).

I have Freeview HD via Media Portal with an HVR3000 anf Asus nvidia 8500GT. I have a direct line of sight from my aerial in Wilton to mt KauKau in Wellington. TV3, C4 are perfect no issues at all but TV1 and 2 both have issues where I get funny pixels every so often - although sometimes it will go for half an hour with no problems.

I have replaced my cable to the aerial to get rid of a join but that hasnt helped. The aerial is one of the standard type that Sky used to install for UHF, its a bit rusted but otherwise looks ok.

Do you think its worth buying a new one? perhaps a high gain aerial? or could it be something else as it only seems to happen on the 720p channels?

I have stopped using DVB-T for 1 and 2 in the mean time - using DVB-S instead - but it would be great to get it working.

Bleazle, happy to help, FYI when you use zoom in MP this is your graphics card upscaling the image if you have hardware acceleration enabled (most likely). And as the old expression goes "you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear" meaning in this case if your original signal is 720x576 then upscaling it to "full HD" will never really make it clearer. There is a lot of nonsense talked about upscaling dvd/HD players but they cant make a signal HD if the orignal source was SD.

Different codecs can produce very different results however, purevideo or power cinema are generally recommended, the latter is my own personal preference. And make sure your output is 50HZ to avoid judder, i.e. scrolling text at the bottom of the V8's, if its not smooth then you're probably not at 50HZ

read this article at Computerworld.co.nz - Freeview — DRM will downgrade best TV images - about not being able to record HD signals without them being downgraded to SD. Appalling. Does this affect us users of MediaPortal? Is it dependant on the tuner card being used?

Haha - yeah it sure is! I take it some of you are already recording HD TV (Boston Legal?) - how much HDD space does an hour take up?

I recorded Boston Legal the first HD show and it takes up 4.32GB

I thought the idea behind HDCP is that everything is encrypted; otherwise, you see either SD or nothing, depending on what the content owner decides.

I assume that when they turn HDCP on, the broadcast stream will be encrypted except for the SD bits, so by default we can see the SD, and the rest is ignored/skipped. To decrypt the rest you need the CAM that's (I assume) in the (DVB-T) STB...

I know HD is available now, but I'd guess that they just haven't turned on HDCP yet.

What I'm saying is that if MP doesn't implement HDCP, we won't be able to see HD content in HD.

If they've done it right.

(Just playing Devil's advocate - I don't know, and I really hope I'm wrong )
