Hi there, and welcome. I've never had that problem with freeview/MP, nor heard of it either. I would suspect that there is a unique problem with your mates system or dish setup.

Get the BEST Reception card\receiver you can, i'm pretty sure the Guy's who are actively involved in this New Zealand post are the people to give you the best advice on equipment and where to buy.

    Good Luck on your setup

I have tried the zxcvbnmz trick of using the EPG gained from the FloppyDVT (from Digital-Everywhere) DVB-S card installed by Autotuning it to all the Horizontal Transponders of Optus D1 which finds Sky TV and the Freeview Channels. I then assign all the Channels I want to the External Source input with appropriate channel numbers (to make my MCE Blaster change channels on the Sky STB and also (Bingo!) I get the guide for all channels without needing to use xmlTVNZ. I am only using MediaPortal Single User 0.2.3 Rec1 latest SVN and all works fine. I could not find the latest Optus D1 Horizontal Transponders (on Lygsat or Satcodx) which now feed New Zealand until I did a Blind Scan with one of my Generic STB's. This is what I got which allowed me to edit my Transponder .tpl list before I did the Auto Scan with the internal tuner:

    12393
    12420
    12456 (at this time Freeview TV3, C4)
12483 (at this time Freeview TV1, TV2, Maori, TVNZ Wide or TVNZ6, TVNZ Sports Exta)
    12519
    12545
    12581
    12607
    12644
    12670
    12706
    12732

    all with SR 22500

It all worked fine. I too do not now need to use xmlTVNZ.

Hi there New Zealanders! Good to see a vibrant community here for MP :)

I am trying to convert from Linux+MythTV to Media-Portal, but have encountered so many issues that I'm on the verge of going back.

I have an old AMD Sempron 2200+ with 1GB DDR RAM, GeForce FX 5200 and a SkyStar 2. I used to have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+, however that fell over last week and unfortunately my main computer also did at the same time so that got all the privelage of new hardware, while the Mythbo... *ahem*... I mean Mediaserver got a slight hardware upgrade but second hand. (It was going to get the P4 out of my main machine, but as said, it died).

On MythTV we had good picture quality with nice signal strength and quality. On MediaPortal/Windows I am having lots of problems.

    I first tried TV Server:
    * I installed the BDA drivers for the Skystar2, and tuned in to the transponders fine. When watching TV though, there were frequent graphical glitches. Seeing the TV log, the signal strength was at about 30% (i.e. not good). However never had this problem before and nothing else has changed!

I then decided to try the latest Skystar2 standard drivers and use MyTV:
    * I selected the card fine and then the LOB/LOF (standard Sky satellite, so 11300, 11300, 0). I hit the scan channels and it failed to lock on anything. I tried Setup4PC, and it was able to get a lock, and had quality of 70% (notice!). I modified the tuning params for MyTV to only pick up the Freeview transponders, but no use.

    OK, so to sum up:
    * TVServer + BDA drivers = bad signal quality and poor image, but can tune in fine
    * MyTV + standard drivers = good signal quality but can't tune in

Can anyone of you guys offer any help?

Hi Dan, i think that the signal quality you refer to is misleading, i also see 32% within MP and yet 70% with the setup4pc. Since the signal strength has not changed i would suspect that the measurement of "quality" is different between the 2 different pieces of software.

With the BDA driver setup did you try a different codec for viewing? I use the purevideo with an fx5200 and get good results.

I also notice you are swapping between the server and standard MP, stick with the server it works very well and offers added advantages like multicast. The latest versions have a corrected ini file for the optus d1 satellite and should scan correctly.

Another option is to try the drivers supplied on the software disk as they are solid and work well, use these with a recent TVserver svn and let us know your results.

    Cheers

Hmm, I don't have the PureVIdeo codec, I'll try and find it.

I've uninstalled everything (the card, mediaportal, mysql) and will build everything up from scratch again... starting with the BDA drivers for the card. I'll let you know how I get on.

Great, I've got it working again.

Still having troubles though with the graphical glitches in the image. I'm still thinking that it is a problem with the signal (it only happens in the video and I've seen similar issues on Sky) but I haven't seen it on MythTV before. It is annoying how frequent it happens.

Oh, I installed the Klite Mega Codec pack, and it now uses FFDshow.

Ok i see everyone else is flying out questions left right and center so ill put mine out there as well. My status,
    PC:
    A64-3000 chip
    Nforce4 mobo, with geforce6150 intergreated
    512mbs ram
    250gbs SATA hdd.
    Windows 2005 MCE
    Running MP
    NEW - Skystar 2 DVB-S card.

Hes the probrem, for one this setup is located at my olds house (some 600kms away) and i access it via LOGMEIN program (great btw). About a week ago i purchased them the skystar2 dvb-s card as the reception at there house is crap to replace the 150MCE anologe card they had. So i, bear in mind that i am not phyically there, didnt do the install myself etc, but anyway i got them to install the pci card into the pc, booted windows up and all is dected etc. Installed software that came with card, and got them to screw in the sky dish cable. Now they have a standard set-top box that has been picking up some satellite signal and here is where possibly a problem lies, i cannot get any signal through the pci skystar card. Here is the low down,

1, They installed it slightly wrong.... and perhaps the cable is not all the way in, or is it possible that the cable can be grounded on the PC case if the pci card isnt fixed firmly in place?? would this cancell out the signal,
2, my old man/me mucked around with the sat dish orientation at some stage so it is not pointing at D1 anymore, however it is pointing at some sat as there settop box detects picture and information from somewhere (he said it has mainly ethinic channels on it)
3, software? using the drivers from the cd, prob new ones out? shoudl i bother with the setup4PC program?
4, settings i am using? how would i know what sat they have, i.e. 11300 or 10750? aside from looking at number of LNB's. Are there any other types out there? im using the 22500kS/s ,

Neither Setup4PC or MP dectects anything, is the pci card less sensitive then the settop box? perhaps i need to get him to try and point it at D1 again!. And is there a program that just detects signal strenght (or is setup4pc basically it) with the settop box last time i was there we just rotated the satellite and the strenght adjusted based on orientation, obviously we didnt have to put any settings into the settop box as its configured for NZ. Lastly am i mental and have missed something!,

    Cheers for any help,

fyx: There are known problems between the Skystar2 and nForce4 chipsets. The latest drivers still seem to have the problem although apparently some work, but it doesn't sound like yours does. You can get the new drivers from http://www.technisat.com

    --

My problems I've been able to stem down to the signal. It is annoying, but I'll have to see what else I can do. It's strange how it is happening now, as it didn't happen before.

But I'm still having problems. I can't afford to pay for codecs, so that's out of the question. But if I try to skip forward/back, the video will start, some sound will play, but the image will freeze for a few moments, and then the image will slowly (after a lot of stutter) return to normal. If I skip ahead quite far (+3 mins say) then the image will freeze, but it appears as if playback "continues" (the timeline still counts). I've tried the different ffdshow options and the Cyberlink one (that's all I've got). I might just try playing with the mega codec pack some more.

dan_nz: I doubt it's a signal problem, I agree with MDS I've noticed that signal Q is different with the BDA driver, I use the standard driver during setup and alignment since Setup4PC serves as a nice signal meter I get about 80% sig Q off D1 but as soon as I go to the BDA driver it shows 30%!

The stuttering problem sounds similar to a problem I had I found that on my ABit NF7-S, my SS2 only worked in one of the 5 PCI slots, it has that stutterig problem every fews seconds in all the others!

I also suggest you stick with TV server it's getting very stable these days.

Check out my site see if there is anything helpful there.

Stick with it, it's really worth it in the end :)
