A new piece of evidence makes this "curioser" than I expected! I tried to work around this by exporting the channel information, editing the XML file and importing the groups from the edited XML. Apparently, MP rejects the group name "CH", but gives no indication of this.
MP imported my first XML file, import-2012-02-07.xml, without complaint, reporting 6 groups imported.
However, the group CH was not imported:
if it already existed, it remained empty and, if it didn't exist previously, it wasn't created.
MP also imported my second XML file, import-2012-02-08.xml, without complaint, again reporting 6 groups imported.
In this case, however, all groups (including "Swiss") were properly created and populated.
Is "CH" a reserved string?
If so it would be nice to have an error handler to prevent or warn against its use.
Anyway, at least I now have some channel groups
