    Synopsis::

    I just reinstalled MediaPortal and windows. I have some TV recordings lying around from MCE and MediaPortal. Since the new Mediaportal installation wont recognize them as Recorded TV i thought i could just move them to my movie folder and watch them from there. However that only works for the DVR-MS files recorded by MCE, the ones from MediaPortal fail to play. The same goes if i just try to play them outside media portal in WMP. I also noticed earlier on that i cant convert the MediaPortal recordings using DVRMSToolbox, but i can with the MCE files. I had to convert them to mpeg2 using the compress plugin to do anything with them, but i cant do that now as the plugin only works on TV recordings.

    So, how can i watch my" old" recordings?

    Here is the relevant bit of the log:

    Sorry for the slow reply.

    I tried rendering one of the files in GraphEdit, and it says it cant build a graph for the file. If i try one of the MCE created DVR-MS files it builds a graph however.

    Note however, that i never had problems playing recordings or converting them from MP's Recorded TV section. But as soon as i re-installed MP it went wrong. Since then i have also installed WinXP instead of MCE, but i dont have any problems in watching recorded TV in MP under recorded TV, but nothing else can play them, including My Videos.

    Since you said you reinstalled windows, did you backup the files and put them in your new install? Its possible that you didnt backup some attached hidden sbe files? Do the files playback in WMP?

    Just being curious - what are the hidden sbe files? What do they do and are associated with?

    When you record while timeshifting, MP takes the timeshifting from the buffer and then starts recording from then on. It makes hidden system sbe files which are linked to the dvr-ms file (which will be very small). While they are about 4-500mb in size they are all linked together so playback will be normal. Converting the dvr-ms file to mpeg will make one whole file.

    Most likely i didnt backup *.sbe files. But these DVR-MS files arent small, they are pretty big. The example file with a recording of Dogma is around 9gb and for some reason it disappered from the recordings database and since then i couldnt play(not before re-install either). Currently the files do not play anywhere. I tried making a new recording and WMP gives an error but does play it anyway. So maybe the SBE files are to blame? But i really dont remember any large *.sbe files lying around and i do show hidden files.

    To see the SBE files you need to have unticked, Hide protected operating system files, Show hidden files isnt sufficient. But if the files are that big I dont think any SBE files would have been used.

    Either the files are damaged/not working or there is a problem on your system because if nothing will play them than its not a MP problem.

    Do you have another PC that you could try and play them back on?

    Before i reinstalled the files would also only play as Recorded TV, i couldnt play in WMP or on any other computers.
