no you don't have to disable ffdshow's h264 settings because mediportal uses whatever you have explicilty assigned in its settings. So if you have purevideo setup in mediaportal to playback mpeg2 and h264 then your set.

A codec is a coder and decoder. Basically it undertsands how to read the file. mainconcepts H264 is a codec as is xvid. A filter is something that comes into play after the codec has done its work such as subtitles being added or perhaps some image enhancement being performed, hence it is filtering the image in some way.

    Hi,

thanks for your guide. Following your instructions (two small difference: coreavc for h264 and dscaler for mpeg2 and dvd) i was able to set up my box so it can play pretty much everything.
I do have one problem however :( external subtitles...
When i play an xvid (srt is in the same directory, and has the same name, as the avi) the subtitle just doesn't load. I see the vsfilter icon in the tray (along with the ffdshow icons), and if i load the sub manually it's ok, but i suppose it should do it automatically, right?
DVobSub is in the postprocess list, so i'm clueless. (Embedded subtitles work as a charm)

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    @ RadyR

I too use coreavc, but its not free so i didn't add it to the guide. As for Dscaler, whilst version 4 is considered the best deinterlacer, the fact that MP ships with gabest fine decoder, i decided not to bother with it.

Regarding the external subs, i presume you have subs selected to play back automatically in MP, the checkbox saying show subtitles. Also did you disable the ffdshow handling of subtitles? In directvobsubs/vsfilters properties is it set to autoload external subs?

let me know how you go.

    Hi there,

yeah, i've set up everything, just like you said (show subs in mp, and disabled every sub-related setting in ffdshow),
but I've just got it right. i've added the autolad version of dvobsub to the postprocess list, and it works. One small glitch, though. While playing one of my mkv-s with embedded sub, the text shows up black, wtf. Everywhere else it's white, with a black shadow, but this one isn't visible. i'm puzzled (it works in mpc using it's own subtitler filter).

In directvobsubs/vsfilters properties is it set to autoload external subs?

    How do i do that?

    Nice guide Goose.

I see there's much confusion about subtitles. I use ffdshow to display subtitles, both embedded and external .srt files and it's controllable from the MediaPortal GUI.

I have only one issue with ffdshow's default subtitle settings and it's when there's both embedded and external subtitles at the same time. ffdshow selects both and display none. I then need to disable the Vobsub option in ffdshow and all works fine.

I think we should recommend users to install as few filters as possible to not mess up their systems. Perhaps VSFilter is needed for ogg though. I've never tried them.

This video with the black subtitles, what kind of subbs are they, .srt .ass .ssa etc.

Also regarding directvobsub ato loading external subs

in movie post processing you can click on filter properties for directvobsub dont do autoloading
then check to see if the tickbox for loading external subs is selected.

    hope that helps

    first off glad you approve

whilst ffdshow can display subtitles the developers believe that vsfilter/directvobsub is better and to be frank i agree with them. Less problems it just always works.

Another reason i said to use vsfilter is so you can see subs in .ogm files. This is a current bug in MP that unfortunately the developers don't seem to want to fix. That being said i havent been updating to latest SVNs so if it is fixed just let me know and i might change the guide to reflect that.

Been playing with MP on vista so i will probably make some changes to the guide to reflect vista's little idiosyncracies. Stay tuned.

    ffdshow audio for Xvids?

    Goose,

Thanks for this great guide, really helped me rebuilding my HTPC. I followed the guide to the letter and everything works except when I play Xvids, it uses MPA instead of ffdshow audio. I have set the ffdshow merit to Preferred and MPA to normal, but still it uses MPA. Of course, MP is configured to use ffdshow audio for DVD, TV and Movies.

Is there some setting in ffdshow audio config I need to adjust?
