first question is how are you downloading your tvguide.xml file? As a side effect of m$oft changing EPG providers the mc2xml v1.3/legacy no longer downloads new EPG after July 26 or so. Also what MP version are you using MP1? ver=?, MP2? Maybe you already posted, but I loose track sometimes.

A couple USA EPG xmltv options are

1. mc2xml (donator ~$20) and use the new win7 EPG download option
2. mc2xml (v1.3) with SchedulesDirect ($25/yr), this will download EPG from SD and write tvguide.xml file that can be imported with MP xmltv

Since you having some problems getting started, I'd suggest just map 2 TuningChannels to 2 GuideChannels, and do an import to confirm your basic setup is correct. Then add the rest of the channels. This is my typical approach when I'm testing/debugging setups/options.

So far you didn't even specify what type of reception you're using. ATSC ? Cable? Sat? All three of 'em need different ways to set up the program guide. Do you use pc devices or receivers to get your signal?
As you can see, we need the basics first before we can help you.
As an example:
if you would use a cable box from your provider and just capture the outgoing signal it wouldn't help to do even a channel scan because you're having only one channel and for that one you wouldn't get a guide
2. it can't be sat over a pc device because we're not allowed in the good ole USA to have 'em.

OK. I've got another hour to blow on this, then I'm cutting my losses. I have two tuners in my W7 computer. I have an antenna. Media Portal is tuning the stations fine. I like the interface, although changing channels seems to be a little slow.

I've attached my tvguide file and couple screen shots which may or may not help. One step at a time, what should I do? One thing at a time. Not 2.

So it's ATSC then. I'm sorry I can't be of any further help since I'm using SchedulesDirect and that works differently to your plugin.
Please be aware that statements like " I have another hour to blow....." are not really motivating for the guys trying to help YOU here.

The reason you're not getting listings is because the newest listings in your XMLTV file are from 26 July. Presumably that's because you're using mc2xml with the Microsoft Legacy service, which appears to have just stopped working in the past few weeks. Out of our control.

So, you need to switch to a different guide data service. I would suggest either signing up for a trial with SchedulesDirect or donating $20 for the mc2xml that works with the new Microsoft service. Either way you can stick with mc2xml and the XMLTV plugin. Minimise change. No wasted learning.

Aside from that, there's probably absolutely nothing wrong with what you've done.

Just to round off the answer to this query...

I had set up channel mapping, although each station has three or so listings for the same station and there's nothing in the literature indicating which to use. For instance there are three lines with WHNSDT (I'm not talking about WHNSDT2 or WHNSDT3, I see three lines with WHNSDT along with other gibberish).

The answer is that it doesn't matter which one you choose.

Confusingly, the XMLTV file you've been attempting to import has multiple names for each channel. Like this:

The XMLTV plugin will show all of them. They're all 100% equivalent.

one additional comment. assuming you either update to mc2xml/donator or use schedules direct with mc2xml/v1.3. When you generate the new tvguide.xml file, you will need to use xmltv>mappings and do a remap and "save" of your channels. The gory details of the channels xmltv/tvguide.xml use are slightly different. To speed up 1st time testing suggest you just manually map 2-3 channels, import, confirm things work, then do all the channels.

What button should I press? Websites of this sort are typically not clear, except to people who live and breathe this stuff.
What should I buy?
What is the name of what I should buy?
Where should it be stored?
Should any existing file be deleted?

All of these things are an error waiting to happen because I don't live and breathe this stuff. Jargon and jumped over steps are errors waiting to happen. Extremely clear, non-jargon steps with clear results indicated with each step, is what's going to really give open source mass appeal. I love the concept. Hate the implementation. I feel like an outsider looking into the holy of holies. I suppose the disappointment is where the 'tone' comes from. I sell for a living, and I go to the bank by taking my customer's tone to heart, and making sure my good and service takes away tone.

This is just a heads-up from a guy on your side, but not a wonk.

The level of detail you're asking for is too much for me. This is as precise as I'm able to be.

Assume you have a choice of 2 options:

1. SchedulesDirect subscription.
2. New Microsoft service.

Choose 1 option, then follow the corresponding instructions below.

Option 1 instructions:

1. Go to https://www.schedulesdirect.org/signup
2. Follow the process to set up an account and lineup. I can't be more specific because I've never done this myself (I'm based in New Zealand).
   
3. Once you have an account, run mc2xml.
4. Select/enter:
   1. Service = "schedules direct"
   2. Username = <your SD account name>
   3. Password = <your SD password>
5. Click OK.

Option 2 instructions:

1. Go to http://mc2xml.hosterbox.net/
2. Click "PayPal Donation".
3. Fill in your details and donate at least $20.
4. Send an email from the email address that you used to make the donation to mc2xml@gmail.com. In the email, request access to the version of mc2xml that supports the new Microsoft service. Mention what operating system you're using.
5. Once you get the new version of mc2xml, run it.
6. Select/enter:
   1. Service = "microsoft"
   2. Postal/Zip code = <your zip code>
   3. Country code = <your country>
7. Click OK.

Everything else after this is the same as what you've already done. In short: use mc2xml to generate tvguide.xml. Import the tvguide.xml into TV Server configuration. Do the mapping on the second tab, and save. Click import again and you should have listings.

Did precisely what you said for option 2, and of course it doesn't work. I'm $20 into this cf and who knows how many hours. Followed every cryptic instruction to the letter. No tv guide. Here are the files. Should I have deleted tvguide since it's obviously an old file? Should I have been told to?
