Sorry to bring this back up but this is exactly the same problem I am having. It plays .mov files fine and .wmv but has black lines with .mpg and .avi files. These all work perfectly with wmp. It was working perfectly this morning, I had done nothing to my computer and then when I came to watch a video, there were black lines all over it. No restart was done, no software installed/ uninstalled.
I can't think of what has happened but it is really annoying as I had my computer working perfectly well this morning.
I am running mp 0.2.2 and I was using this when it was working fine.
I have included the log file. (I think it is the right one)
