AW: deploy tool crashes on mpaudioswitcher.ax

frankteb, can you check if you have the named above DLLs in your (x86 OS) Windows\System32 or (x64 OS) \Windows\SysWOW64 folder?

Currently I'm at work. I will check it this evening.

    Hi,

Okay, so this is not common to one OS. And yet we only have 5 users in total with this problem (Vasilich - do you also see this? I think that would make it 6).

I've got to be honest, it's going to be a complete nightmare trying to work out what is causing this, and can we really ship 1.2.0 with an older filter because of a small number of problems which are very likely to be the result of a corrupted file somewhere in the OS.

I've tried to find the section of the installer where this filter is registered. I don't want to degenerate too much into wild speculation, but what if this problem is not specific to MPaudioswitcher.ax, but it is flagged up because this is the first one that tries to be registered? I am happy to post the other .ax files from my MP install, in case the relevant people want to test them.

Either way, this is a tricky problem to fix and I think we need more information before we decide how to attempt this.

    Hi,

Well I guess the only thing we can really do is ask the community for help.

    The key questions are:

    1. Does anyone with a Windows XP SP3 system and KB2467174 NOT have this problem?

    2. Does anyone with a Windows XP SP3 system without KB2467174 have this problem?

At least if we can isolate it to this particular update, we might have a chance of knowing how to proceed.

    Mark

The PC on which this fails for me DID have KB2467174. I uninstalled it that update and retried but still got the access violation.

I have also re-applied XP SP3 and all security updates to this PC and that also did NOT make any difference.

    Hi,

Just an observation. We only seem to have 5 users with this problem. I would like to assume that if someone had taken the trouble to download the beta, and they had this problem, then they would report it. So, it does seem pretty isolated.

But we still need to fix it. Not being able to install is about as serious as a bug can get.

Even with those users, some of them have other XP systems that work fine.

Could registering this filter depend on audio hardware? That could be a common factor to look out for.

Alternatively, is one of the five prepared to reinstall windows XP, update everything and then try to install? If this is a problem with the users' OS, then we should definitely try to understand it and help, but not in a way that fixes the problem for a very few at the expense of 99.9% of the users. Especially not if the truth is 'something wrong with your system, reinstall windows'.

I wouldn't put the blame on users systems. It could very well be something we are doing wrong. It is not just a single bug report - a handful is more reports than most bugs get. Remember, only a tiny fraction of users report bugs.

As I understand it some users have worked around the install issue by using an old mpaudioswitcher.ax file and building their own installer. It would be nice if someone could say if this has been done successfully on an affected system.

Oh, I agree that it could be a bug.

My gut feeling for a bug of this nature is that because it is such a show-stopper for those users, they are more likely to report it, which is why I am inclined to think it is quite isolated.

Should I post the other filters from my install, so that the users with problems can work out whether this is only a problem with the one filter, or whether it applies to all, but this is simply the first one, so it happens to be the one that gives the error?

Please do. It would be nice to know this for sure.
The changes to mpaudioswitcher.ax were bigger than for the other filters - so my money is on this being isolated to this one filter. Since changes in mpaudioswitcher.ax are unlikely for 1.2 we can consider reverting to the older binary and postponing the proper fix to 1.3.

Maybe a crash dump would help.
See Memory Dump - MediaPortal Wiki for details on what is needed. The wiki is a bit outdated but the procedure is essentially the same.
Note: in the latest debugging tools, adplus is an executable - not a script.

To get a crash dump follow the "Requirements" section in the above linked wiki page. Then do the following:
    1. Copy attached debug version of MPAudioSwitcher and all related files to MediaPortal's program folder.
    2. Start a command prompt with administrative rights (on Vista/Win7 right click "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator", on WinXP just start "Command Prompt") and type:
    Code:
pushd "%ProgramFiles%\Debugging Tools for Windows (x86)\"
    adplus -crash -quiet -o c:\MP_crash_dumps -sc %windir%\system32\regsvr32 [B][I]<full pathname to mpaudioswitcher>[/I][/B]
Of course you have to replace <full pathname to mpaudioswitcher>with the real path and filename of MPAudioSwitcher.ax

Post the resulting crash dump here so that we can analyze it.

PS: I have included debug version of MSVCRT (MFC is statically linked). These MS files are NOT redistributable. Use only to debug this issue, then delete once we figure out what is wrong - TIA

    Hi,

Here are the complete filters from my 1.2.0beta installation.

If affected users could try registering all of these, and report which fail, it will tell us whether the problem is isolated to MPaudioswitcher.ax.

    Thanks,

    Mark
