DVB-IP / IPTV to replace DVB-C? (1 Viewer)

Hi everyone,

I'm getting fiber to the home somewhere in the upcoming months and the provider also offers (D)TV on this fiber connection (based on multicast).

In my current MP-setup I'm using 2xFireDTV cards in my server with DVB-C signal and this works very good (thanks guys!); but if I could switch over to DVB-IP I'm able to cancel my current DTV (coax) contract and save about 15 euros a month ;-)

But I still have some doubts / questions about the DVB-IP setup and maturity of this solution in MP:

-1- Could someone please confirm a working DVB-IP setup (in the Netherlands) and provide some details on this?
-2- Do I need a second NIC in the server and spoof the MAC and/or IP address to receive the mulicasts?
-3- How do I "import" a .m3u file (with the multicast addresses mapped to the TV stations) in MP?

Al hints / feedback would be welcome. Thanks !

Not answering, but rather asking a question: What type of encryption solution does the provider use? SmartCard or "proprietary" SW in STB? If the later, then you probably don't wanna got down that road....

Most fiber providers in .nl have setup a separate VLAN on their network where they multicast the TV channels. They don't use any SmartCard encryption, but they claim their service to only work with the Amino STB they provide with the subscription. However the only special thing the Amino does is sending a crippled DHCP request which allows it access to the VLAN. It's possible for a DD-WRT router (or linux machine) to send this request as well.

IS anyone aware of any English language stations (for lack of a better description) being in Canada, German isn't working for me sadly. Also if there are any. how would one add them to the list.

Just to give you all a brief update....

After spending some hours of reading forums (tweakers.net) I manage to get it up and running.

It works (almost) fine in my situation (provider XMS or XMSnet); the only problem I have is that changing channels on a client doesn't always work.
The server receives the multicast on its IPTV NIC, but sometimes the unicast to the clients (other NIC) won't reach the established state.
The workaround is to change channels again and switch back to give it another try.

I'll continue to troubleshoot and will update again when fixed.

    Greetz.

Would you be willing to write a step-by-step guide? That would give other users a kickstart, and they wouldn't have to read for hours to figure it out.

Maybe all of us "Dutch Lijbrand/glashart IPTV people" should get a centralized spot somewhere on the dutch section of the forum, to help each other out and share tips and tricks. There might be a lot of MePo users out there, which don't know about tweakers (I doubt it)

I have noticed that changing the codec realy makes a difference in the "channel change --> picture freeze issue"; I now use the nvidia codec and this gives me one picture freeze on (average) 25 channel changes (this was a bad as 1:2).
