I think someone has written a patch to allow "true fullscreen"? ...

Yes, but I rejected this patch for reasons outlined in my previous post. Getting the visualization to display fullscreen is pretty trivial. But preventing the likely resolution change is not possible as it's done by the viz plugin. I'm not willing to take the risk of damaging anyone's display device. Sorry.

    WMP does break monitors?

If the resolution switch happens in Windows MediaPlayer, I guess the monitor could also be damaged in this case... and probably this happened before our unfortunate user ever tried MediaPortal, which is now running on his brand new resolution-tolerant LCD!

Still, if you are particularly worried about this remote possibility, how about a warning, the first time the user tries to switch to fullscreen visualization?

I think this should be something to be set more "centraly" (maybe in the startup wizard too). The user to define if anything in MP can/should switch the resolution (CRT) or not (LCD/TFT).

Some time in the future I guess.

The future though (where CRT will be obsolete both in computing and home-cinema) is for programs (not only MP) to actually adapt to the panel resolution and STAY there.

Whilst I understand you don't want to damage people's display, its Media Player (well its visualisation) that makes this switch. So are you saying that if a user switched to fullscreen whilst using media player from windows their monitor would be damaged? Surely Microsoft would be slated for that - amongst other things ;0)

If media player lets you do it, I don't why you shouldn't at least have an option to allow this in MediaPortal, or at least a warning like the previous reply suggested...

I think SteveV talks about LCD & plasma TV monitors (even some CRTs are affected). Computer monitors allow multires, of course. TV sets usually only support a very limited defined set of resolutions and refresh rates. The used visualisation is not aware of this and could switch to a resolution/refresh rate that might damage your TV set. Not saying all of them will be damaged for sure, but chances are that this can happen. Even some TV manufacturers have that note in their specs.

But surely my point about media player is still valid - Windows Media player would adjust these resolutions in fullscreen mode anyway? So you may as well let MediaPortal do the same.

As has been said an option would be great....

Obviously, I don't contribute to the development of WMP and as such had no say in the decision to allow visualzation plugin resolution switching

MP is an HTPC application and as such a user should be able to make a safe assumption that it will behave in a display friendly way.

The proper fix is to have MP host visualizations natively rather than through another application such as WMP. I'm currently working on this. In the meantime I *won't* be adding fullscreen WMP viz support optional or otherwise. Sorry.

True. You are absolutley right, of course. I'm just eager to have smooth full screen vis.

Therefore, I can't wait for MP hosting of visualisations. Hurry up, lol ;0)
