So what does? I'm sure years ago MP supported cue out of the box and did a good job of it. Now days if you use a cue file you don't get true gapless playback.

    ???

There was no change at all on how MP processes Cue and Gapless playback.
If gapless playback was ok for you when you used it with CUE files, what would have changed?

I still do not have any luck with gapless playback. Using the built in BASS engine I still get a small gap between tracks.

Still the same with MP 1.4.
PureAudio is not compatible with MP 1.4. Is there an alternative for gapless playback?

    can someone please define "small"?
are we talking about 500 ms or less?

Gap in music == anything above zero :) Just think about the live CDs, orchestal CDs, non-pop CDs that usually flow between songs. It is quite annoying if there is a pop/pause between songs when they should flow nicely.

I really would like to see rips of such songs to test it.
The maximum delay i could think of that is occuring in MP is 150ms - 200ms.
And it seems that there are people out there hearing this.

I can hear this on live CD (Flac rip) with the BASS player (MP 1.3 and 1.4), while it sounds perfectly with the PureAudio plugin on MP (like in foobar2000).

I will try to provide small samples.

For those using MP 1.4, take a look to this post : PureAudio for MP 1.4?
The provided beta version seems to run using Asio4all.

I'll check if I can find some flacs that are able to demonstrate the issue (might take few days, after all it is summer finally up in the north :)).

Anything above 0 ms is not gapless and it will be possible to hear it on seamless tracks (the smaller the gap the more it sounds like a "glitch" or "clip" than just a pause).

    you are right

2 small extracts to help reproducing the issue:
    - the last 5 seconds of a track : 01.flac
    - the fisrt 5 second of the following track : 02.flac
