Please keep testigng, we need to figure out what is causing the crash (I really doubt it is the change I did as it is trivial one and if it is causing the crash then it could be some buggy drivers that don't like it. But I doubt it).

I'm not able to access my dev PC for half a week, so I need your help. Someone please provide the dshowhelper.dll from the 1.1.0 Alpha (or current SVN release) for to be tested with 1.0.2 (to see if it is just incompatible with 1.0.2 in general, sorry I cannot rememer if there have been some changes between 1.0.2 and current SVN / 1.1.0 Alpha).

The un-modified dshowhelper.dll from MP 1.1.0 SVN 23178 attached (which also causes MP 1.0.2 to crash on my system).

The MP 1.1.0 dll is noticably smaller than the MP 1.0.2 version (80k versus 96k), so there may have been some changes between the two versions.

Thanks for this info. Looks like it is not caused by the change I did (which is a good thing). I'll provide the patched 1.0.2 DLL during beginning of the next week (after hangover from Ilosaarirock has been cured :p -> Ilosaarirock Festival 2009 | Welcome )

It might be also some compiler settings etc. At least such huge percentage of filesize change would require lot of changes in code side (and I cannot remember that there would have been such).

I just tested another client to confirm: using either the "old" or the "new" dshowhelper.dll from 1.1.0 Alpha on a 1.0.2 installation on Windows XP SP3 crashes MediaPortal. So they seem to be uncompatible. As Owlsroost points out the difference in size also indicates some large differences in codebase.

But hey, I run 1.1.0 Alpha at home so thanks for the fix, and enjoy the festival :)

That was my other thought - maybe it's compiler settings changes creating incompatiblities with MP 1.0.2 ?

Anyway - have good weekend at the festival :)

I'll try it again once I'm home. For now I'm using MPC-HC. Hope we find a resolution soon.

Edit: I tried again today, but switching to Nvidia settings and then selecting Full (0-255) instead of Limited doesn't solve the problem in Windows 7. MPC-HC still no problem.

Could be a driver side issue as not even the driver setting is not solving the issue you are seeing. Are you sure that you are using EVR custom renderer in MPC-HC?

I checked in MPC-HC and it is in fact using the EVR Custom. I also get only 8% processor load while watching a 720p .mkv, so I am pretty sure DXVA is activated. Btw I use the 32 bit version of the MPC video codec on 64 bit Windows 7, because the 64 bit version wouldn't register properly.

Hooray for Microsoft changing random crap without telling anybody. I have two completely separate PC builds, one with Nvidia (a dual 285 monster for gaming), the other with ATI (my HTPC), completely different 1080p monitors and everything, both had black level issues with MediaPortal and MPC HC with EVR. With MediaPortal, this .dll solves it, with MPC HC I can use the pixel shader option. I'm happy now (but still pissed it's so damn difficult to get a HTPC working correctly).

Everyone who is having a crash with 1.0.2 and the new test dshowhelper.dll file provided in this thread, please check if installing Visual Studio 2008 SP1 redist DLL files will solve the crash Download details: Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

On a quick look into SVN log that could be the reason why the crash is happening. Nothing else big has been done

ps. ISIS was really great on last weekend :p

Btw: After a complete clean install last weekend, still perfect blacklevels with updated dshowhelper.dll

I think i've got a perfect system now (except for the weatherbug crash) :D

What is the proper channel to report this bug to Microsoft?? Since its pretty clear its a MS issue, since it happens across various platforms, applications, and driver revisions, and reverting to older evr.dll files fixes the issue.

It is we who must change. Microsoft is God, if they want to change a default behavior, they will do so and tell us what we can do with our bug request...
