Since (I think) this Athlon XP 2800+ benches around a Intel P4-2.5ghz, your reply is especially helpful because your old system spec is basically just like what I'm trying to run now.

Cool. Thanks.

So, with this setup, is 1gb fine, or would performance increase with more?

The docs say MP v1.0 needs 1gb, but I don't know if that is plenty or not.

HP Pavilion a320n (AMD Athlon 2800+ 2.08Ghz), 1024MB
ATI 9600xt AGP 128mb
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1600 - 1183 - MCE Remote and eHome USB IR Receiver/Blaster
ChainTech AV-710 PCI Audio (VIA Envy24-HTS based with optical S/PDIF)

WinXP MCE2005 with SP2 on C:,
Envy24 5.40a, ATI Catalyst 8.12, ATI-CyberLink DVD Decoder
RAdmin2, Acronis10, Criticals, DotNet 1.0, 1.1, 2.0.
MCE2005 Update Rollup-2, WMP 11, WinTV 6.x (CD4.6a), TitanTV
MediaPortal 1.0, ms2xml (TVGuide), S-Video Capture
- Followed Goose's Codec Install Guide -
ffdshow_beta6_rev2527_20081219.exe (Generic Stable)
Haali Media Splitter v1.9.42.1 (01-2009)
QT Lite and Real Alternative Lite
VSFilter (Direct VobSub)

Nothing is running in the Windows background (like Windows Defender or Anti-Virus). With this old second-hand PC, I'm trying to squeeze out as much power as I can. I'm not going to do BluRay ... just DVD and MPEG2, XVid ... stuff like that, usually from the hard-drive.

Well I would say yes.
However after you build it then verify open your task manager and look at the physical memory usage while running MP.
RAM is sooo cheap so upgrade if any doubts. Make sure you buy the fastest speed RAM that your mommy board will take.
Can you give me a link to MS2XML? I googled it and can't find anything. I hear it works great so I want to set it up.

moab,

RE: RAM
Ya, its pretty cheap, but this old PC2700 RAM is more expensive than newer (faster) stuff so I didn't want to buy more unless it was really needed. 1 gig is usually good for XP and I could instead put that money toward an eventual dual-core. That's a good idea about the task manager while MP is loaded.

RE: mc2xml

Sorry, I misspelled it. Try searching again. This is the guide I used:
