i just started using mediaportal as a backend on my server.. i planned to use comskip to automatically remove commercials after recording but also wondered if it is possible to use handbrake to reencode the recorded files to a smaller size?

Hi there and welcome

You can manually use handbrake but then you will also have to move the recording from Recorded TV to normal Video section (or TVSeries/MovingPictures/MyFilms) since it will not be a ts file anymore.

You can use ForTheRecord in combination with TV Server. In FTR, you can add "processing commands" for recordings, which can be used to start comskip, but also to start handbrake encode the recording. ForTheRecord can also handle multiple file formats in the recording screen, so you don't necessarily have to move the files.

Just to throw another way of doing things, look at MCEBuddy, why I particularly liked that is it incorporates comskip and has a delay converting feature, useful if you watch stuff pretty quickly and do not want to keep it, then you set a reasonable delay before conversion happens ie 15 days, so only if the file is still there does it bother wasting processing power to convert.

For the records can also run the process in different times:
- Run when the recording starts (live)
- Run when the recording ends
- Run at a fixed time after the recording ends (delay)
- Run before the recording is deleted (not very useful for what you want)

Plus you get a far more advanced recording engine then the TV Server offers
