MCEBuddy looks just the job. Again....thank you. You have no idea how close I came to giving up in sheer frustration. It is clear MP can be much more than a simple tuner, so I will need to spend time with it and explore its capabilities. I see a 'contribution' button at the top of the page. For financial donations? We try to provide resource like the setup guides in the wiki to help with setup. When they're not sufficient, it always pays to ask for help here. Otherwise it is all too easy to spend hours getting nowhere.

I think it's worth pointing out that after shutting down and going out for a few hours, I came back, switched on the PC and no HD channels. None. I changed the Tune setting back to 10 secs, rebooted, and all HD channels re-appeared. Maybe that's a problem with the £15 USB stick I bought.
