Is there some way to change the raw mapping of the windows media center remote? With Hid Demo I find that the 'stop' button creates a <ctrl><shft>D5 ....why!? Can I change this somehow to be just the 'B' key!? I've tried mce remote mapping - doesn't affect this apparently

Are you trying to use a remote control or a keyboard?

You can customise your input devices using the "Remotes and Other Input Devices" section in "MP Config". Using the "HID" tab, you can:
    • Customise your remote control, and/or
    • Customise your keyboard.
Select one or both devices, and then pick the config that you are going to use:
    • For remote-control only, pick the "Classic" config.
    • For remote control plus keyboard, or keyboard only, pick the "Full" config.
Then use the "Mapping" dialogue to modify what actions the buttons on the remote and keys on the keyboard perform.

The HID support is very flexible, but it does require some learning to understand how to use it. The MP Wiki may help; start here.
